EMS Training Officer

Job Overview Pay Schedule II, Grade H15. Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Utilities. Eligible applicants will be placed on a list based on the examination below. Future vacancies in this class within any Baltimore County office may be filled from this list. All interested transfer and promotional candidates must apply at this time. Responsibilities Drive commercial weight, single‑axle vehicles including dump, street flusher, water, sludge, and tool trucks, and refuse collection packers. Salt and plow roads during snow emergencies. Operate and tow equipment such as tractors with mowing or other attachments, forklifts, stump grinders, rubber tire loaders, and rollers. Load, unload, and assist in loading equipment, tools, and materials; transport crews and/or materials to and from jobs. Perform various manual labor tasks; maintain equipment and tools assigned to vehicle; install special adapters and fixtures as required; perform preventive and routine maintenance on trucks and equipment; assist mechanics with major repairs. Keep simple records and logs; participate in safety‑related training including confined space, trench working, and hazardous materials handling. Lead and instruct other workers; train and assist in operation of equipment and vehicles; perform other related duties as required. Qualifications Possession of a valid license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver’s license, or where required, a class A equivalent. Possession of a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, maintained throughout employment. For non-Maryland residents, minimum age of 21 at time of appointment. Conditions of Employment Employees may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice; some positions may be designated as Emergency/Essential. Newly hired employees must join the local AFSCME union or pay a service fee. Applicants selected for appointment must complete a physical examination, drug screen, and employment background investigation, including criminal background, education, and fingerprint check. Employees may be required to work on rotating or fixed shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime, and may be called to duty in emergencies. Physical & Environmental Conditions The work requires heavy physical labor, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds, and operating vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment. Tasks may involve exposure to hazardous conditions such as traffic, trenches, and adverse weather. Benefits Health insurance (medical, prescription, dental, vision).
