Senior Accountant

Summary Responsible for monthly monitoring and reconciling of the general ledger, financial reporting to assigned units, cash management, and annual audit support. Responsibilities The Senior Accountant is responsible for the monthly oversight and reconciliation of the general ledger, financial reporting to assigned units, cash management, and annual audit support. General ledger and bank reconciliations must be completed monthly in accordance with NSO’s financial policies and procedures. This position will also record bi‑weekly payroll entries, assist the Accounts Payable/Payroll Specialist with payroll processing, update monthly benefit expense worksheets, and record accruals to facilitate timely closing. Additional duties include preparing financial reports and billings to funders, preparing and renewing grant budgets, supporting program management in managing funds, coordinating with unit staff, funders, subcontractors, auditors, and stakeholders, preparing program budgets, monitoring actual performance against budgets, reviewing program management, managing accounts receivable, and collecting cash. Primary Job Duties Prepare and analyze monthly budget vs. actual financial reports for assigned contracts. Ensure financial compliance with all assigned contracts, including billing submission. Perform general ledger reconciliation and review. Review, evaluate, and resolve billing process issues and revenue collections. Prepare program and contract budgets and forecasts as required. Assist in processing/review of bi‑weekly payroll and recording payroll entries. Process and review electronic cash receipts. Prepare monthly journal entries as assigned. Maintain collaborative working relationships with team and management. Assist in preparing for the annual audit by completing assigned tasks. Assist Program Manager and Directors with establishing projections and goals. Perform other duties as assigned by the Controller, CFO, or senior management. Maintain strict confidentiality. Candidate Requirements Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. Minimum Required Experience Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Experience in billing and fiscal fields, including accounting systems, governmental contract billing systems, general ledger applications, and accounts receivable. Experience reconciling general ledger accounts. Experience with funders such as City of Detroit, HUD, Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network, and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services preferred. Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Excel and Word. Experience with non‑profit accounting preferred. Excellent, timely, and efficient organizational skills. Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills. Strong communication (oral and written) skills. Experience in Intacct or similar cloud‑based financial systems.
