Licensed Professional Counselor

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine duties that include providing Mental Health services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS.

  • Provide initial screening and conduct individual, marital, family and group counseling for children, adolescents, and adults.

  • Under the direction of the Lawton Behavioral Health Supervisor, provide diagnostic, treatment, referral, crisis intervention and consultation services for psychiatric patients in accordance with standards established by the contractor's professional mental health organization (such as Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Association for Professional Counselors, National Association for Social Workers, American Psychological Association, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatry, etc.).

  • Provide services that are to be provided to patients with a wide variety of acute and chronic mental health problems including depression, suicide attempts, bereavement, psychotic episodes, family conflicts, substance abuse or dependence, and trauma resulting from violence or abuse of emotional, physical or sexual nature.

  • Coordinate service provision to patients and consult with professional colleagues as needed to promote optimal patient care including appropriate referrals for psychiatric evaluation or medication.

  • Perform routine duties including providing Mental Health services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS.

  • Participate in scheduled case conference under the direction of a licensed behavioral health professional.

  • Make entries into appropriate client records and according to Area Guidelines, utilize the RPMS Behavioral Health Systems as required.

  • Assessing complex cases and the situations involved under direct supervision of a licensed counselor. Prepare reports of findings with recommendations as to appropriate actions with the framework of mental health resources available.

  • Keep abreast of all procedures for the behavioral health department as set forth in PolicyStat for behavioral health.

  • Keep abreast of all procedures set forth by the Service Unit Policy and Procedure Manual and the Privacy Act.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Counseling or closely related field, complete internship, and have active license (from any state) as an LPC, LMHC, LCPC, LPCC, LCMHC, or LMHP. Completion of all supervision requirements.

  • 3 years post-masters education experience

  • Possess professional knowledge of the field of counseling applied in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals, couples, families and groups of people with acute and chronic mental health problems or mental illness in accordance with best professional practices.

  • Possess a professional knowledge of social implications of problems of human behavior, adjustment, and mental illness.

  • Possess the ability to use a wide variety of individual, group, or family counseling interventions in working with clients.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of psychological disorders as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the Mental Disorders (DSM-VTR).

  • Must understand current theories of the mental disorders and how to relate these points to a Native American understanding of mental illness.

  • Knowledge of the socio-cultural factors that affect the mental health of American Indian Populations and skills in the design of activities that we can ameliorate the problems (i.e., community consultation, education, primary and secondary prevention).

  • Ability to communicate and cooperate with organizers and motivates available community resources.

  • Follow established guidelines that include Indian Health Service Policy Manuals, Lawton Indian Hospital Policy and Procedures, Behavioral Health Manuals and directives, professional standard of ethics, and current professional literature.
