Second Shift Supervisor
Jackson County's Juvenile Detention/Youth Center has an immediate opening for a 2nd shift supervisor. This is a full-time position with a 4-day/10-hour schedule of Wednesday through Saturday, 1:30 pm to 11:30 pm. The successful candidate will oversee facility operations including the safety and security of staff and residents and is responsible for enforcement and compliance of policies and procedures. Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Youth Center Director, serves as supervisor of residential and detention staff on an assigned shift and is responsible for the supervision, safety, and security of residents and staff during the shift. Responsible for the security of the building and ensuring compliance with all policies and procedures of the Youth Center and Juvenile Court. Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Striving towards a High Performing Organization, Youth Center employees will be actively engaged, thinking leaders, meeting the mission, vision and values of the department.
- Supervises Youth Specialists on a shift, makes shift assignments, provides orientation and training of staff and ensures that staff assignments are properly carried out. Initiates performance reviews and meets with staff to review results and deals with performance and employee relations issues in the early stages.
- Responsible for facility security on an assigned shift and ensuring that all security, supervision, and program procedures are followed. Oversees and participates in the constant supervision of residents. Conducts regular building checks. Conducts physical body searches.
- Responsible for supervision of any resident who is determined to be at risk of suicide or other medical complications. Coordinates crisis intervention strategies with other community agencies.
- Provides initial response in cases of medical emergencies and schedules appointments with nurse or other medical and/or mental health professionals and arranges transportation as necessary. Oversees dispensing of medications to ensure that proper dosages of the correct medications are given to residents as directed by Medical Authority.
- Reviews incidents reports, conducts investigations as necessary and documents dispositions. Reviews resident disciplinary matters and related problems with the appropriate staff and counsels and directs staff regarding disciplinary activities. Approves disciplinary action including use of restraints and seclusion.
- Ensures timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of incident reports, observation notes, and other reports/activities.
- Completes Daily Unit Report summarizing all activities on the shift including resident counts, disciplinary problems, nurses recommendations, medical logs, property damages and admissions and releases. Authorizes money for activities and purchases and submits balanced records of debits and deposits to the activity fund. Ensures proper staffing levels; replaces absent employees on the schedule and verifies employee time for payroll purposes.
- Serves as Intake Referee, during non-business hours of the Court, for the Youth Center which includes reviewing documentation and recording decisions to admit youth or continue hearing. Completes telephone interviews of law enforcement personnel; utilizes the RAI to determine if the offense meets the criteria for admittance.
- Monitors aftercare residents at home, school, and places of employment. Documents all pertinent information and makes recommendations regarding disciplinary action. Organizes and implements activities and work projects for youths and assist with crisis intervention, job search, and other skills.
- Responds to inquiries and concerns from families, other agencies, other counties and law enforcement representation.
- Ensures that intake and discharge procedures are properly administered and that all documentation is accurate and complete.
- Assists staff in conducting sick calls, completing physicals and determining medical needs of resident.
- Occasionally performs the functions described for Youth Specialists.
- Assumes responsibility for operation of the Facility in the absence of the Youth Center Director/Assistant Director.
- Coordinates community projects with other agencies, such as the MIS race clean up.
- Monitors supply inventory and orders supplies as needed.
- Provides weekend and holiday monitoring of in-home detention youth normally provided by a Probation Officer.
- Provides supervision and oversight to department interns.
Qualifications: Education/Experience: Associates Degree in social work, psychology, counseling, criminal justice, or closely related field required with five years' experience in a facility, child caring institution, or a criminal justice agency. Bachelor's preferred with two years of experience equivalent to that of a Youth Specialist. Other Requirements: Employees must be able to perform work in a highly stressful work environment: employees must exude a calm demeanor and ability to handle, mitigate, and deescalate volatile situations. Regularly required to deal with highly volatile and angry individuals (i.e. yelling, cursing, verbal confrontations, threats, etc.). Valid Michigan Driver's License. Must be certified or be able to become certified in CPR, AED and first aid. Must be certified in approved physical management system or be able to become certified in approved physical management system. Certification from the Michigan Judicial Institute in Basic Counseling, Law I and Law II. Relevant Skills/Specialized Equipment Knowledge: Basic office equipment such as telephones, calculator, photocopiers, Fax, etc. Photographic, audio and video equipment. Computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, database entry and maintenance, financial applications, and desktop publishing. Security cameras and card access system.
