The district employs about 4,000 employees, including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL:

Responsible for all levels and phases of the sport, ensuring all tasks are completed correctly and on schedule. Particular duties may be assigned to assistants, but the head coach remains ultimately accountable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA). Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (e.g., competition travel, meetings, practices) to ensure a safe environment. Maintain records for district, conference, state, and KSHSAA compliance (e.g., pre‑participation physicals, concussion forms, insurance waivers, activity consents, schedules, equipment inventory). Verify all equipment, physical exams, and waivers are complete before a student can practice or compete. Ensure all transfer students meet eligibility and that participants purchase required activity tickets. Implement and schedule practices, coordinating facilities, staff, and equipment, and submit schedules to administration. Supervise practice sessions, secure locker rooms, and report injuries to school officials per policy. Collaborate with athletic trainers and follow their recommendations regarding safety and injury prevention. Adhere to general policy decisions that align with school and USD 500 procedures. Organize uniform/equipment checkout, maintain inventory, enforce care rules, and account for items each season. Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance. Maintain records of evaluation procedures, assess athletes, and provide performance feedback. Attend supporting activities (league meetings, coach meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, banquets). Develop individualized and team practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention). Evaluate facilities and playing fields for hazards and recommend improvements. Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, provide direction, and monitor activities. Guide coaching staff in instructional techniques and practice organization. Assign duties to coaching staff and prepare written evaluations each season. Advise coaching staff, parents, and athletes on sportsmanship and KSHSAA Rule 52. Monitor academic eligibility per KSHSAA and USD 500, providing counseling or tutoring when needed. For high school only, report team scores to media outlets and produce public releases. Perform other duties assigned by the Building Principal or Athletic Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certified teacher or qualifying for Rule 10 certification through KSHSAA. Successful completion of a criminal background check. Current certification in CPR and AED.

COMMUNICATION AND ORGANIZATION

Maintain communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action meeting student educational needs. Utilize existing technology effectively in performing duties.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and interpret varied instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations; write reports, curriculum, and correspondence; present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
