A day in the life
You start your shift on the production floor, blueprint in hand, confirming the first piece off a line meets customer specs. A few hours later, you’re verifying grain flow on a critical part, documenting tensile and hardness results, and updating records in the ERP so everything is traceable. By afternoon, you’re partnering with production and engineering to disposition a nonconforming lot and issuing a Repair Shop Order—then wrapping up with a final inspection and calibration check on a frequently used gage.
What you’ll do- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T to verify dimensional compliance
- Complete first-piece inspections for multiple departments
- Run in-process and final inspections; accurately fill out history cards and inspection reports
- Audit the floor for adherence to control plans and work instructions
- Set up and operate precision and special gaging: micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and other metrology tools
- Prepare test samples using cut-off saws and related equipment
- Perform hardness, tensile, and torque testing to the relevant standards
- Conduct grain flow testing and safely mix required chemicals for metallurgical evaluations
- Evaluate raw materials to confirm they meet specifications
- Complete PPAP documentation as assigned
- Assist with gage R&R and capability studies under guidance
- Disposition nonconforming material and generate Repair Shop Orders as needed
- Review incoming material certifications (raw material, heat treat, plating) for compliance; maintain cert records in the ERP
- Execute routine calibration on gages and measuring instruments per schedule
- Maintain all quality documentation and records within the ERP/business system
- Participate in meetings to support quality initiatives
- Work with customers and suppliers when needed under the direction of quality leadership
- Follow all Lean, Safety, Environmental, and Quality policies and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned
- 2–4 years of manufacturing quality inspection experience preferred
- Proven skill reading blueprints and interpreting GD&T
- Hands-on experience with precision instruments and special gaging
- Familiarity with PPAP and statistical tools preferred
- Basic computer skills; ERP experience preferred
- Meticulous attention to detail and measurement accuracy
- Working knowledge of dimensional inspection and test methods
- Confident identifying nonconforming product and escalating appropriately
- Basic understanding of SPC concepts
- Solid documentation and recordkeeping
- Clear communicator who collaborates effectively with production teams
- Committed to continuous improvement and compliance
- Stand and walk for extended periods
- Lift and handle parts up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Perform repetitive hand movements while measuring and testing
- Work in manufacturing areas including heat treat and production
- Wear required PPE
