: About the Opportunity: The Marketing Developer will play a key role in enabling California Academy of Sciences' mission to regenerate the natural world by developing and maintaining the technical codebase necessary for Academy teams to deliver effective email communications and to generate valuable, actionable insights that help optimize engagement and revenue among key audiences including members, donors, and ticket purchasers. The mission of the California Academy of Sciences is to regenerate the natural world through science, learning, and collaboration. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 2-3 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs. Please do not apply if you are not able to work onsite. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 1021. About the Marketing Operations Team: The Marketing and Communications department, operating within the Experience division of the Academy, has four primary roles: gathering audience and market insights, effectively conveying the Academy's brand, value, and mission at every touchpoint, optimizing revenue through pricing and investment strategies, and engaging audiences with compelling science and conservation content to promote environmental literacy. The Marketing Operations team within Marketing oversees technical strategy and execution for email marketing and automation, including reporting and segmentation, and marketing analytics for web, email, and other campaigns. Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain the JavaScript codebase used to generate all Academy emails
  • Develop and optimize interactive features in email templates
  • Develop email performance applications to allow the Email Team and stakeholders adequate data for campaign optimization
  • Develop applications to aid in email workflow, testing, or reporting
  • Develop a technical support framework for our ESP
  • Maintain and extend tag architecture on Academy websites and digital properties to ensure proper metrics tracking and privacy compliance
  • Develop and maintain SQL query library for cross-department segment and campaign reporting and dashboards
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following: The successful candidate is experienced in developing and managing a JavaScript-based framework and will leverage JSON and dynamic scripting. They will also be experienced in developing highly performant, cost-efficient queries to support effective data analysis from BigQuery-hosted datasets, as well as having: Experience and Education:
  • 2+ years' experience in HTML development
  • 2+ years' experience using JavaScript
  • 2+ years' experience working and designing relational databases and warehouses and integrating complex marketing technology/email/CRM platforms
  • 2+ years' experience developing SQL queries
  • 2+ years' HTML development experience for email specifically preferred
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a related field preferred
Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficiency developing HTML emails, including CSS
  • Proficiency developing with JavaScript with experience parsing JSON
  • Familiarity with email testing tools such as Email on Acid or Litmus (preferred)
  • Knowledge of and upkeep with current email trends
  • Proficiency with Google Analytics
  • Proficiency with BigQuery data repository architecture and best practices
  • Knowledge of Tessitura CRM architecture (preferred)
  • Proficiency with code repositories such as GitHub (preferred)
  • Solutions-oriented problem-solving and independent troubleshooting of technical issues (strongly preferred)
  • Innovation: Ability to bring new ideas, create inventive solutions, and find efficiencies to transform manual or detailed processes.
  • Ability to accept feedback gracefully and integrate it
  • Proficiency in written and verbal English communication
  • Strong ability to collaborate with others and work as part of a team

Compensation and Benefits Starting salary will vary based on experience, skills/knowledge set, and internal equity. The Academy offers a total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits based on the hours per week worked.
