Science Safety Lead (SSL) Date Posted: June 30, 2025 Location: Centinela Valley Union High School District – Lawndale High School Closing Date: 07/07/2025 by 5pm Duration: July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026 Compensation: $55 per hour, not to exceed 50 hours; plus additional hours to complete required training (minimum 11 hours). Hours may vary depending on training needed based on experience and background. Responsibilities Conduct and maintain an accurate inventory of all chemicals stored in each building, chemical storage rooms, and classroom labs. Ensure proper usage, storage, and disposal of all chemicals and lab specimens. Perform training: complete online and/or in‑person courses covering chemical handling, biological waste, storage, disposal, and emergency procedures. Provide chemical safety training and support to staff, including SDS review. Maintain safety data sheets and a readily accessible binder; keep a physical SDS for every chemical on site. Maintain and inspect safety stations, first‑aid equipment, and chemical safety kits. Regularly inspect chemicals, inventory, and storage containers; update the inventory annually; discard leaking, damaged, empty, or unlabeled containers. Store unused chemicals in a segregated, limited‑access area with proper placards and signage. Coordinate monthly inspections of hazardous‑waste storage, arrange for removal and proper disposal, and schedule yearly disposal. Use the district online inventory document to manage the chemical inventory accessible to the science department. Conduct yearly inventories of all chemicals in each building, documenting name, quantity, hazard information, and location. Maintain knowledge of chemical storage, handling, and safety requirements. Submit monthly checklists for safe handling and storage to the Science Department Chair, Classroom Teacher, and district administrators. Attend quarterly district meetings; report on monthly checklists, progress, and provide input on safety guidelines. Maintain ongoing communication with the Science Department Chair, administrators, and teachers regarding inventory, disposal processes, and hazardous conditions. Uphold compliance with the CDE Science Safety Handbook; assist with development and updating of the CVUHSD Safety Lab Guidebook. Minimum Qualifications Valid Clear California Teaching Credential in Science. Minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience. Desired Qualifications Experience with a variety of chemicals used in high‑school science classrooms. Demonstrated willingness and organizational capability to ensure chemical inventory accuracy.
