Summary/Objective:

The Construction Inspector assists and acts as a liaison between contractors, engineers, and clients and will include the inspection and observation of roadway, bridge, and utility projects.

This position will work under the supervision of the Field Operations Manager and Resident Engineer Project Engineer.  This position will assist, as needed, with field inspections, documentation, and contract administration to ensure that the project is built in accordance with project plans and specifications.

Applicants must be capable of physical activity in an outdoor setting including but not limited to light lifting, bending, stooping and climbing, walking and standing for prolonged periods of time, and regularly operating motorized vehicles. All applicants must consent to a background check and motor vehicle report as a requirement of employment.

Essential Functions:

 

●       Conducts routine visual inspections and specified tests on raw materials, in-process goods, and finished products to ensure quality standards are met.

●       Performs material sampling and testing as required.

●       Prepares and maintains project documentation, including quantity calculations.

●       Provides support for residency audits and ensures compliance with requirements.

●       Enters data and updates records in SiteManager/AASHTOWARE Project.

●       Tracks contractor time and activities for accurate project management.

●       Verifies utility locations and collaborates with team members and client companies to ensure accurate site information.

●       Tests, inspects, and approves materials in accordance with established quality specifications.

●       Identifies defects in materials and installation processes through observation and testing.

●       Compares inspection and test results to specifications, reporting findings to supervisors for analysis and further action.

●       Interacts with staff, contractors, and the public in professional manner.

●       Maintains comprehensive quality records and documentation as needed.

●       Travel is required and expected, applicants must be willing to accept long-term and short-term out of town projects.

 

Competencies:

●       High school diploma or equivalent.

●       Thorough understanding of ODOT and OTA specifications.

●       Thorough attention to detail.

●       Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

●       Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software as needed to complete reports.

●       OHCMT Materials Sampling and Testing Certification.

●       Familiar with grading, drainage, and utility projects.

●       Sitemanager application experience.

 

 

Work Environment:

The Inspector will frequently operate in outdoor settings and must be prepared for a range of weather conditions, from extreme heat to cold. Work locations will vary from highly traveled urban roads to more remote undeveloped areas.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. Employee will need good vision to see their surroundings; glasses are acceptable.   This position requires the ability to lift weight occasionally. The employee may need to walk through rough terrains.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work :
This position requires flexibility in work hours, with the expectation to be present whenever contractors are on-site. The role includes on-call and as-needed availability. Work hours will vary depending on the specific project, weather, and any project delays.

 

Required Education and Experience:

• At least one year of related experience is required.
• OHCMT Materials Sampling and Testing Certification.
