Overview Find Your Future With Us at USDA – Animal Plant Health Inspection Service. As a Veterinary Medical Officer at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), you monitor disease agents and provide information to epidemiologists for national surveillance. You may participate in projects involving animals to investigate diseases, characterize pathogens, develop diagnostic tests, or produce reagents. Major Duties Identify problems, make recommendations, and create solutions by developing new tests as required for the successful execution of disease control programs. Perform pathogen isolation, identification, and characterization by collecting and interpreting relevant observational data. Communicate with external customers regarding sampling and test results. Conduct and participate in training schools and seminars by presenting lectures and demonstrations. Assist in maintaining quality control of tests performed at NVSL and other approved locations in accordance with ISO 17025 standards. Collaborate and consult with various staff to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, and develop strategies for diagnostic assays. Position Details Position Start Date: 06/25/2026 Position Close Date: 07/06/2026 Salary Offered: 90234 - 117307 USD Per Year Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date, including specialized experience and/or education as defined below. All applicants must meet the Basic Requirement outlined in the Education section below. GS-12 Level Requirements: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 level) in leading, designing, and troubleshooting the interpretation, development and assessment of immunologic or diagnostic assays; leading design and implementation of in vitro and in vivo studies to evaluate efficacy of biological countermeasures; and analyzing and synthesizing scientific data from in vitro and in vivo studies for peer-reviewed publication and SOP development. OR Successful completion of a Master’s degree in an area of specialization related to the position (examples include animal science, avian medicine, infectious diseases, veterinary clinical sciences, epidemiology, microbiology, immunology, pathology, veterinary preventive medicine, and related fields). OR Residency/post-graduate training: Successful completion of two years of internship, residency program, or fellowship training in a discipline related to the position. Certificates or letters documenting completion should be provided. Transcripts are required.
