EMG Technician – Neurology, Advocate Christ Medical Center Position Overview Full-time position with 40 hours per week, scheduled for inpatient and outpatient duties. Pay range: $20.80 - $31.20 per hour. Major Responsibilities Perform motor and sensory nerve conduction studies and somatosensory evoked potentials. Identify and eliminate or reduce artifact by positioning patients for optimal accessibility and comfort. Prepare patient and equipment for needle examinations, disinfect electrodes and probe per facility policy. Verify correct nerve stimulation by observing appropriate muscle contraction. Document waveform latencies, amplitudes and conduction velocities for physician review. Perform routine NCS/EMG procedures per facility policy. Successfully complete all pertinent electrodiagnostic competencies. Daily Operations Maintain a productive schedule, averaging 6.5 out of 8 hours per day scheduled for direct clinical care. Perform billing, mail distribution, environment upkeep, supply ordering, filing, and departmental committee duties. Participate in quality improvement teams and measuring critical functions. Report safety issues and participate in safety initiatives. Follow safety and infection control measures. Attend departmental meetings, in-services, and continuing education programs. Use patient satisfaction initiatives and serve as a role model for patient and family expectations. Ensure laboratory and testing site adhere to OSHA standards. Patient and Room Preparation Ensure examination room is properly prepared. Prepare data sheet with patient demographics, procedure details, interpreting physician, medical history, medications, results, and other studies. Explain procedure to patient/family and address concerns. Assist in removal of clothing, braces, or transport to examination table. Assist electromyographer in positioning, applying surface electrodes, labeling, and organizing printouts. Maintain rooms and ensure adequate supply levels. Equipment Maintenance Calibrate equipment per departmental policy to ensure proper operation. Assist in safe maintenance of equipment. Complete competency assessments related to equipment use and calibration. Notify physicians or supervisor of suspected equipment problems. Maintain floor stock medications where applicable. Documentation Record basic patient information in the medical record. Document accurate results and data from electrodiagnostic procedures. Complete all written documentation per departmental policy. Notify physician or supervisor of suspected equipment problems. Ensure standard precautions, filter, sensitivity, and time base accuracy per facility policy. Floor Stock Medications Stock and restock floor medications. Retrieve medications for physicians as requested. Check medication dates and discard expired medication appropriately. Education and Experience High School education or equivalent with emphasis on physical or biological sciences. Minimum 1-2 years EMG technician experience required, with formal training under a physician (usually 6 months). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Good interpersonal and communication skills. Basic computer knowledge. BCLS Certified in CPR. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Ability to lift 50 to 100 pounds occasionally or 25 to 50 pounds frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds constantly. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts over 35 pounds or when the patient cannot assist, patient handling equipment is expected to be used with at least one additional associate when available. Unique Patient Lifting/Movement Situations Patient handling and movement will be assessed on a case‑by‑case basis, ensuring safe and appropriate equipment use.
