Design Assistant The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. It is currently seeking a Design Assistant. The purpose of the position is to provide a work-study program for undergraduates interested in continuing their education while simultaneously working on a WYDOT design team. Selected candidates are provided with training in highway design's fundamental principles and techniques and actual design experience. They are encouraged to continue their employment with the Wyoming Department of Transportation upon graduation. This position has flexible work hours of 20-40 hours per week. Must work at least 80 hours per month. Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West. Prepares plan drawings and details for highway construction projects utilizing computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software Learns to use the current WYDOT CADD software, procedures, and basic drafting requirements to produce engineering drawings and details with extensive formal and on-the-job training Prints and reproduces plan drawings for distribution and peer review Researches as-constructed plans Maintains a filing system within the work area for design projects Incorporates quantity summary work as required to help designers meet project deadlines Participates in training on various computer software related to performing duties Maintains familiarity with department policies and procedures relative to drafting and engineering plan development and other areas in general Identifies and resolves problems by gathering or reviewing information gathered by others, analyzing and resolving problems, or recommending solutions to designers and supervisors Preferences/Agency Requirements: The offer of employment to the selected candidate is contingent upon enrollment in the Engineering Program at LCCC for the Fall 2026 Semester. Knowledge of basic math, reading, and writing Knowledge of communication and time management Knowledge of applying drafting skills in developing engineering detail sheet(s) that will eventually be compiled to complete a set of engineer contract documents Minimum Qualifications: Education: High School Diploma Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in the Transportation occupational group) OR Education & Experience Substitution: 1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in the Transportation occupational group) Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None Physical Working Conditions: Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods May work in adverse environmental conditions May work in close proximity to high-speed traffic Notes: FLSA: Non-Exempt WYDOT uses E-Verify, an Internet-based system, to confirm all newly hired employees' eligibility to work in the United States. The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace. LCCC students are not required to take any courses during the summer term but may take summer classes if they wish. LCCC students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25. After starting, students must work year-round, including summers, for at least 80 hours in the calendar month.
