Overview

This role is situated at a prominent medical facility located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Our organization operates a leading medical center, recognized as the largest facility within the Department of Defense and the only Level 1 trauma center. This 425-bed academic institution is dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services, including an outpatient rehabilitation center known as the Center for the Intrepid. Preference will be given to candidates who are Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Experience in Inpatient and Consultative Medicine is also preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Function as an Internal Medicine Physician within a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH), addressing a wide range of health services for adults, from preventive care to the management of complex acute and chronic conditions.
• Act as an attending physician on the inpatient general medicine ward.
• Facilitate and/or integrate care across various components of the healthcare system, including subspecialty services, hospitals, home health agencies, and nursing homes; admit patients to the hospital as necessary.
• Lead and oversee a multidisciplinary clinical team, including nurses, social workers, therapists, and technicians, responsible for patient care and panel management.
• Provide inpatient and outpatient consultation for the Internal Medicine Consult Service, being available for telephonic or in-person consultations when on call.
• Deliver continuous, comprehensive primary care for adults and Department of Defense beneficiaries, adhering to care standards, the PCMH model, Army policies, and applicable regulations.
• Complete necessary documentation and maintain records of all medical services provided, ensuring compliance with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
• Engage in Continuing Medical Education and quality assurance initiatives.
• Perform moderate to heavy lifting, up to 45 pounds, as required.
• Offer consultative preoperative and perioperative advice to surgical specialties and provide training in consultative medicine to house staff.
• Participate in educational activities for residents and interns, contributing to the ongoing quality improvement of the Internal Medicine Training Program.
• Attend departmental or hospital board meetings and engage in Continuing Medical Education and Quality Assurance activities.
• Carry out additional duties as assigned.

To qualify, candidates must meet the educational and experiential criteria outlined below. Experience includes both paid and unpaid roles, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). All relevant experience will be considered, and your resume should clearly detail your qualifications. If qualifying through education, transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirements for Physician (Internal Medicine)

• Degree: A Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by recognized bodies such as the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. For foreign medical degrees, equivalency must be demonstrated through certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: Transcripts or proof of foreign equivalency must be included with your application.)
• Licensure: Candidates must hold a current, unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
• Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as an internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited institution.

Residency Training for GP-14

Candidates must have successfully completed the necessary accredited residency training in Internal Medicine, along with equivalent experience and training totaling at least four years. Experience cannot substitute for the required residency training specific to this specialty.
