Duties The Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered nursing care to individuals and families in an ambulatory care setting. The RN demonstrates professional competence, leadership, and sound clinical judgment while delivering high-quality care to patients with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. The nurse provides oversight and direction to licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants, as appropriate to the clinic setting, and actively contributes to care coordination, health promotion, education, and quality improvement initiatives. Requirements Conditions of employment include eligibility and compliance with applicable hiring standards; U.S. Citizenship is required; Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959; you will need to set up direct deposit; and this is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. IHS selectees may be subject to Employee Health Policies related to Measles and Rubella and seasonal influenza immunizations. The selected individual must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained, adverse actions may occur, up to removal from Federal service. You must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Position subject to rotating shifts; days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; shift rotations may vary (8-, 10-, 12-hour shifts). On-call hours or standby duty may be required. Background investigations are required. Applicants must complete all required forms within five calendar days of issuance. Applicants should maintain regular communication with their assigned Personnel Security Specialist throughout the process. Education and basic requirements for nursing positions are specified below, including licensure, degree, and experience requirements. Qualifications To qualify, your resume must demonstrate sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the position. Experience includes paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. You must clearly identify duties and responsibilities in each position and the total hours per week. Education and licensure requirements are detailed in the sections below. BASIC REQUIREMENTS Education A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelors, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program is required. The program must have been accredited by the CCNE, CAAHEP, ACME, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Nursing School Official certification from the CGFNS is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Licensure Applicants must have passed the NCLEX and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a U.S. state or territory. Experience The work experience must equip the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing. Basic Requirements for the GS-5 Possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing with no experience; or possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one full year of professional nursing experience. Basic Requirements for the GS-7 Options include: bachelors degree in Nursing with Superior Academic Achievement or one year of professional nursing experience; or a diploma/associate degree with two years of experience; or completion of at least one year of graduate education in a professional nursing program. Basic Requirements for the GS-9 Masters degree in professional nursing or at least one year of professional nursing experience with a qualifying degree. Basic Requirements for the GS-11 PhD or doctoral degree or related field; or substantial professional nursing experience with an appropriate degree. Minimum Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service, performing outpatient nursing duties, care coordination, and related tasks. Specialized Experience GS-07 Outpatient nursing duties including triage, patient assessment, and implementing clinician standing orders; administering medications/treatments; coordinating patient care; teaching patients; using outpatient equipment. GS-09 Implementing disease management guidelines; conducting comprehensive assessments; planning care with the team; monitoring patients; coordinating referrals and education; documenting in EHR; administering medications; participating in quality improvement; mentoring staff; coordinating clinical flow. GS-11 Managing complex outpatient care; leading a charge or team; analyzing clinic data and leading improvement initiatives; coaching staff and coordinating care transitions. You must view occupational requirements for this position: Nurse Series 0610. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Education This position has an education requirement. You are encouraged to submit unofficial transcripts. Official transcripts required from selectees prior to an official offer. Acceptable accreditation is per U.S. Department of Education. If using foreign education, provide a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript. Additional information Federal employees earn annual leave based on years of service. IHS may offer credit for related non-federal experience or active duty service. This position may be covered by a Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized with a service agreement. There are loan repayment programs through IHS, NHSC, and HRSA. Not all locations offer promotion potential to GS-11. You will be evaluated under the OPM Merit Hiring Plan.
