Job Description The Mechanical Engineer 4 is responsible for the design, development, testing, and analysis of advanced aerospace systems, including aircraft, rockets, missiles, propulsion systems, and associated components. This role requires expertise in structural design, thermal and fluid systems, and prototype hardware development. The engineer will perform complex analyses, support manufacturing and testing, and contribute to new product development that advances Exquadrum’s mission. Conducts research in a field or specialization of an engineering discipline to discover facts, or performs research directed toward investigation, evaluation, and application of known engineering theories and principles. Plans and conducts, or oversees engineering personnel performing, complex engineering experiments to test, prove or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of others researching in related technological areas. Evaluates findings to develop new concepts, products, equipment, or processes; or to develop applications of findings to new uses. Provide scientific direction to professional staff. Plans, executes and administers research programs that are centered on development, testing, effectiveness and control of program objective. Designs procedures and establishes research methodology to investigate and solve problems. Contributes to long-range goals and objectives for future projects including support proposal and business development. This individual may also be called upon to support the Executive Management to review business operations and major program execution on an as-needed basis and support other review teams. Requirements Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. 7-11 years of engineering experience or a Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. Experience in managing mission-critical aspects of complex flight engineering projects. Ability to interpret complex technical instructions, drawings, and data, and apply them to practical solutions. Proven teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to plan, organize, and solve engineering problems. Capable of working independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team; able to oversee small teams for well-defined tasks. Ability to quickly analyze, understand, organize and communicate complex technical concepts/problems across multiple disciplines. Strong written and oral communication skills, including preparation and delivery of technical presentations. Experience in 3D modeling (SOLIDWORKS preferred) and engineering drawing approval. Motivated self-starter with the ability to propose new ideas and solutions to management, colleagues, and customers. Experience in a military, defense, or commercial aircraft environment preferred. Must have a valid, state issued, driver’s license. This position requires that the employee be eligible and maintain eligibility for a Secret Clearance. Must be a US Citizen. Essential Functions Design, develop, test, and oversee the construction of aerospace vehicles, propulsion systems, and mechanical subsystems. Perform engineering analyses and evaluations leading to designs, prototypes, or computational/finite element models. Mechanical design and test in a fast-paced aerospace R&D environment. Flight-weight structures design and deep knowledge of modern manufacturing and design validation techniques. Composite structures design and manufacturing. Conduct research to determine system performance characteristics and apply results to improve designs. Analyze test data for parts, components, and systems; recommend design or process modifications to enhance quality, reliability, and efficiency. Develop detailed documentation, trade studies, and reports for design reviews and project reporting. Manufacture and assemble prototype hardware and specialized test equipment. Support authorship of proposal sections, including technical content and cost estimating. Manage vendors and subcontractors, including oversight of contract fabrication and procurement. Contribute to long-range company goals and objectives through innovative engineering solutions and proposal development. Support Executive Management in reviews of business operations and major program execution as needed. Structural and thermal analysis for propulsion systems and flight hardware. Fluid systems design, including tubing, valves, and control hardware for propellant delivery. Development of combustion chamber components, nozzles, and test hardware. Integration of mechanical systems with electronics, ignition devices, and power/battery interfaces. Lead small teams in the design, assembly, and testing of prototype missile and rocket subsystems. Establish technical direction, manage integrated schedules, mitigate risks, and collaborate cross-functionally to resolve design and interface issues. Preferred Attributes Experience in propulsion system design, testing, and hardware fabrication. Background in missile, launch vehicle, or military aerospace applications. Familiarity with system-level testing of aerospace vehicles. Strong skills in CAD modeling, analysis software, and mechanical design tools. Ability to analyze, organize, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly across disciplines. Strong technical writing skills for reports, proposals, and documentation. Propellant, combustion, and diagnostic development. Rocket motor and/or engine research and development. Innovative propulsion designs, experiments, and advanced engineering calculations. Proposal and technical reports. Lead proposal narrative authorship and cost estimating. Business Development. Program Management. Responsible for the technical and scientific development of the propulsion and power research laboratory. Essential Safety Functions This position may involve working with or around hazardous materials, high-pressure systems, chemicals, high-voltage equipment, and/or potentially dangerous environments such as test facilities, propulsion systems, or live-fire test ranges, as well as the manufacturing and handling of propellants, pyrotechnics, and explosive devices. This role requires a strong safety mindset, consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and full compliance with safety protocols and operational and risk mitigation procedures. Employees must wear appropriate PPE, and comply with all corporate, OSHA, industry-specific safety requirements, and other regulatory safety requirements. Participation in risk assessments and safety briefings is required before conducting any hazardous testing activities. Training will be provided for all hazardous tasks. Physical Requirements This position involves a combination of sedentary and active tasks. Individuals may need to sit or stand for extended periods, and walk primarily on level surfaces for portions of the workday, when in an office environment. Occasional reaching above shoulder height, reaching below the waist, and lifting may be required for handling documents, tools, or materials. Proper lifting techniques must be used at all times. Additional duties may include Working at differing site elevations and on elevated work platforms, following all fall-protection and safety protocols. Performing physical tasks for extended periods, such as standing, walking, or operating equipment. Lifting, carrying, and maneuvering equipment and materials as required by the position. Working in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures (heat and cold), wind, dust, and other outdoor elements. The performance of this position may require work in manufacturing and laboratory areas as well as the outside test facilities. Under certain conditions, these environments require the use of personal protective equipment such as eye and face protection, hearing protection, protective gloves, respirators, foot protection, and lab coats. This position may also involve handling energetic materials and chemicals. The role may require working long or irregular shifts, including nights and weekends, to meet program and project deadlines.
