CERTIFED NURSE ANESTHETIST

SITE OF SERVICE: Evans Army Community Hospital (EACH), 1650 Cochrane Cir, Fort Carson, CO 80913

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) supporting Evans Army Community Hospital provides high-quality care to military beneficiaries in a mission-focused military treatment facility environment. This role supports the health and readiness of active-duty service members, families, and other eligible beneficiaries through direct patient care, clinical coordination, and accurate documentation in the electronic health record.

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master’s degree in nursing.

Accreditation: Graduate from an academic program, approved by the Council on

Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA).

Certification: Certified as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) or the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

Cardiac Certifications : Must have the following hands-on certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross:

o Basic Life Support (BLS)

o Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Experience: Must have a minimum of 24 months in the last 36 months of documented current clinical independent experience and competency. Must have the level of experience and documented current clinical competency to be awarded “Regular” privileges to work independently. Additional experience requirements: Have at least 12 months within the last 24 months providing epidural analgesia (labor epidurals). Have experience in the delivery of and monitoring of all types of anesthesia utilized in the delivery of obstetrical anesthesia (general endotracheal, subarachnoid, AC, block and epidural).

Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist in any one of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

U.S. Citizenship: Shall be a U.S. citizen

English Language Requirement: Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.

Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract.

DUTIES:

• Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform post-operative evaluations within the defined scope of awarded privileges

• Perform a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient. This includes obtaining an informed consent from the patient, requesting consultations and/or diagnostic studies and ordering preanesthetic medications.

• Develop and implement an anesthetic plan of care.

• Perform an assessment immediately prior to induction of anesthesia of the patient. This shall include a review of the medical record with regard to completeness, pertinent laboratory data, time of administration and dosage of pre-anesthesia medication, together with an appraisal of any changes in the patient's condition from that noted on previous visits. This note shall include

any previous anesthetic experiences and complications thereof noted in the medical record.

• Maintain the patient's physiologic homeostasis and corrects abnormal responses to the anesthesia and/or surgery.

• Collect and interpret patient physiological data by selecting, applying or inserting noninvasive monitoring modalities.

• Manage the patient's airway and pulmonary status.

• Manage the patient's emergence and recovery from anesthesia by maintaining homeostasis, providing relief from pain and anesthesia side effects and preventing and managing complications through selecting, obtaining, ordering and administrating medications, fluids or ventilator support.

• Record all pertinent events taking place during the introduction of, maintenance of and emergence from anesthesia, including the dosage and duration of all anesthetic agents, other drugs, intravenous fluids and blood or blood components on all patients that have received anesthesia care.

• Record post-anesthetic visits, including at least one note describing the presence or absence of anesthesia related complications of the procedure.

• Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, peripheral and neuraxial procedures, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient

reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform post-operative evaluations as privileged by the credentials committee.

• Advise appropriate anesthesiologist of adverse reactions necessitating non-delegated medical decisions; take appropriate actions as directed or required.

• Assist with the training of other staff personnel to include in venipuncture and intravenous therapy, respiratory care, and anesthesia.

• Indicate responsibility for the contents and accuracy of all prepared reports/forms by affixing his/her own signature to the documents after validation.

• Attend and participate in professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities.

• Department quality improvement activities as assigned by the department chief may include, but not limited to:

• Occurrence screening checklist

• Patient care chart audits

• Special studies on quality of care within the Anesthesia Service

Non-clinical duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Maintaining cleanliness of anesthesia work areas and equipment

• Rotation of stock and removal of supplies nearing expiration

• Reviewing and updating departmental operating instructions

• Hospital committee representation

• Orientation of personnel

• Hospital assigned training

• Narcotic Control

• Audits as needed

• Adhere to all Service/MTF/Local policies for delivery of anesthesia services at EACH

• Contract CRNA’s will be scheduled on a rotating basis to include day, evening, night and weekend shifts which may be 8, 10, 12, 16 or 24-hours in length, to average 40 hours per week

HOURS:

Rotating basis to include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts, which may be eight, twelve, sixteen, or 24 hours in length, averaging 40 hours per week. Duty hours are Monday-Friday, 0700-1500, with after-hours, weekend, or night-shift anesthesia services occasionally needed. Overage hours: 100

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Teamwork skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
