Correctional Sergeant II (S)

Reporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager I at a medium custody male correctional facility, this position is primarily responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Officer IIs. This position's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assigning lower level custody staff to an area or post.
  • Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to DAC policy.
  • Managing a facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
  • Ensuring that staff are fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
  • Responding to situations such as, distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders, and communicating effectively instructions/directions during emergency situations, drills and searches.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and acting when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.

Salary Range $39,244 - $68,679

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

Nash Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility located in Nashville, Nash County, NC. It houses approximately 800 male offenders. The facility provides offender labor to two Correction Enterprises operations located onsite: the Optical Plant and the Print Plant.

The State of North Carolina/Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) uses the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) as a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent.

Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Member-4 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to their applications.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB-23A (RPAS), along with the state application, if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.

Applicants who are former members of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service, must attach a copy of the DD-256 or NGB-22, along with the state application.

The NC Dept. of Adult Correction must adhere to the US Dept. of Justice Final Rule on the "National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape."
