Archeologist

US Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs

Position Location This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Director, Bureau of Indian Affairs in Aberdeen, South Dakota; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Lakewood, Colorado; Muskogee, Oklahoma. This position performs professional archaeological and cultural resource management work in support of BIA programs, tribal governments, and related activities involving cultural resources, historic preservation, and environmental compliance responsibilities. Experience and Education Requirements Basic education requirement for all grades: Education: Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archaeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related coursework in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archaeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school. Related Curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in the above degree description. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in the degree requirements, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. Experience: Four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeological field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Minimum Qualification Requirements In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Qualifications for GS‑07 I have 1 year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS‑05 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include archaeological and historical archival research and analysis; correlation of varied archaeological and historical data pertaining to environment, settlement patterns and subsistence practices; field identification and testing of archaeological or historic sites; mitigation through excavation for data recovery, and preparation of reports based on the conclusion of findings. OR I have 1 full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or equivalent) OR I have a combination of experience as described in the education requirement and education as described here, which totals 100% of the requirement. To compute, determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify. OR I graduated with a bachelor's degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work and I have documented Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) during my undergraduate studies. I meet the SAA by one of the following three methods: (1) class standing – upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses; (2) grade point average – 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B or better) as recorded on my official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements). Class standing – upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses. Grade point average – 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B or better). Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. Qualifications for GS‑09 I have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑7 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include planning and carrying out the Bureau's cultural resources management and NEPA programs; fulfilling and executing the Federal government's legal responsibilities related to cultural resources used by the tribes for sustenance, cultural enrichment and economic development and support; and promoting the conservation, development and wise use of these resources for the maximum benefit of Indian people. OR I possess a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's degree, must be related to position. Qualifications for GS‑11 I have 1 year of specialized experience at the GS‑09 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include conducting on‑ground archaeological surveys and investigations, consolidating, and interpreting findings based on work; preparing appropriate documentation for compliance with federal laws and regulations; acting as lead field archaeologist for lower graded archaeologist; fulfilling and executing the Federal government's legal responsibilities related to cultural resources used by the tribes for sustenance, cultural enrichment and economic development and support; conducting searches of available records and documents to determine need for field investigations and potential effects; and advising on implementing policies and procedures as they relate to cultural resources and archaeology. OR I possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree if related. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
