FIRE PREVENTION ENGINEERING ASSISTANT II - FIRE EMERGENCY

Fire Prevention Engineering AssistantII Under general supervision, performs professional fire protection engineering work involving review and approval of complex construction plans, and inspection of building sites for compliance with fire protection codes and regulations. Responsibilities Conduct plan checks of complex building plans (A, B, E, F, H, I, R, and S occupancies and specialty projects such as high rises, high‑pile combustible storage, and hazardous materials) with regard to fire flow, hydrant location, and access requirements. Review construction plans; identify discrepancies with building and fire codes; provide recommendations for resolving discrepancies; convey such information to the project applicant; generate plan requirements using electronic permit database; review plan resubmittals for compliance. Determine access and needed fire flow and hydrant requirements during the entitlement process. Provide technical supervision to lower‑level fire prevention engineering staff including consultation and training on preliminary plan checks. Perform calculations for building area justification and fire flow requirements; conduct field inspections to verify hydrant locations; calculate hydrant flow; perform hydraulic calculations for on‑site fire protection systems such as residential and commercial automatic sprinkler systems or other special extinguishment systems; perform hydraulic calculations for trees, loops, and complex grids. Evaluate requests for alternatives to applicable fire codes and ordinances, and provide analyses and recommendations to fire prevention management; act as liaison between the Fire Department and other county, city, and public agencies by attending meetings and providing information on fire protection requirements and assigned projects. May occasionally carry heavy equipment over rough terrain during inspections. Minimum Requirements Option I: A Certificate of Registration as a Fire Protection Engineer. OptionII: Graduation from an accredited college with specialization in civil engineering, fire protection engineering, fire protection administration or fire technology related field AND one year’s experience performing fire protection engineering work. OptionIII: Five years of experience performing fire protection engineering work. OptionIV: Two years of experience at the level of Fire Prevention Engineering AssistantI. License Requirements A valid California ClassC DriverLicense or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job‑related essential functions. Physical Class Moderate (Class3): Requires standing or walking most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds. Other Requirements Out‑of‑class experience will not be accepted for this examination.
