Discovery Immunology Principal Research Scientist

Vertex Pharmaceuticals seeks a Discovery Immunology Principal Research Scientist to lead immunology programs targeting autoimmune diseases. The role encompasses target identification, disease mechanism investigation, and early drug discovery, requiring deep expertise in immunology, translational science, and collaborative leadership in a laboratory-based setting.

Responsibilities

• Lead immunology discovery programs from target identification through mechanism-of-action studies and strategy development
• Design, oversee, and interpret in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo studies across innate and adaptive immunity
• Develop disease-relevant models and innovative experimental approaches aligned with translational strategies
• Collaborate across chemistry, computational biology, and project management to advance programs and communicate findings
• Mentor scientists and contribute to publications, presentations, and competitive landscape tracking

Requirements

• PhD in immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, or related life science; or bachelor's degree with 10+ years hands-on laboratory experience
• Substantial industry or postdoctoral discovery research experience with scientific leadership of early-stage programs
• Deep expertise in autoimmune, inflammatory, and immune-mediated disease biology
• Proficiency in immunology assays, flow cytometry, cell-based testing, and mechanistic studies
• Strong publication record and demonstrated scientific contributions
• Experience mentoring scientists or leading research teams in matrixed environments
• Familiarity with single-cell, genomic, proteomic, or systems-immunology approaches preferred

Compensation: $140,000 - $210,000 base
