The Controller is a hands-on financial leader who will own the company’s finance and accounting function while helping build the systems needed for continued growth. This role combines day-to-day accounting execution with financial leadership, process improvement, and practical guidance to ownership and operations. The ideal candidate is experienced, energetic, self-directed, and comfortable moving between detailed work and higher-level priorities.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Own the accuracy, timeliness, and usefulness of the company’s financial information.
• Work effectively at both the strategic and transactional levels, stepping into critical accounting work as needed.
• Turn financial data into practical insights that improve decisions, accountability, and profitability.
• Identify risks and improvement opportunities, recommend solutions, and follow through on implementation.

Financial Management and Reporting

• Lead the monthly close and prepare accurate, timely financial statements and management reports.
• Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, billing, collections, and reconciliations.
• Manage cash flow, working capital, banking activity, and liquidity needs.
• Lead budgeting and forecasting and provide leadership with clear financial trends and recommended actions.

Project Financial Oversight and Profitability

• Own WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, revenue recognition, and job cost controls.
• Review project profitability and identify trends affecting margins, billing, cash flow, and estimating accuracy.
• Partner with operations to investigate variances and drive timely corrective action.

Financial Risk Management and External Relationships

• Maintain effective internal controls, compliance, and audit readiness.
• Manage relationships with accountants, auditors, banks, insurance providers, and other financial partners.

Leadership and Team Development

• Lead and develop accounting and payroll team members while remaining willing to step in when needed.
• Establish clear priorities, documented workflows, and accountability for accurate, timely results.
• Ensure payroll is processed accurately, timely, and in compliance with applicable requirements.

Technology and Process Improvement

• Improve accounting systems, workflows, controls, and reporting to increase accuracy, efficiency, and visibility.
• Implement scalable tools and documented processes that support increased project volume and organizational growth.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required; CPA or CMA preferred.
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including financial reporting, operational accounting, process improvement, and team leadership.
• Experience in construction, environmental services, industrial services, or another project-based industry strongly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, internal controls, and construction accounting, including WIP, job costing, and revenue recognition.
• Hands-on experience with general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, reporting, and audit support.
• Proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting tools.
• Demonstrated initiative, ownership, sound judgment, clear communication, and the ability to move between detailed work and strategic priorities.
