The Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California (WCIRB) is California's trusted, objective provider of actuarially-based information and research, advisory pure premium rates, and educational services integral to a healthy workers' compensation system. The WCIRB is California unincorporated, private, nonprofit association comprised of all companies licensed to transact workers' compensation insurance in California, and has over 400 member companies. No state money is used to fund its operations. The operations of the WCIRB are funded primarily by membership fees and assessments. To accurately measure the cost of providing workers' compensation benefits, the WCIRB performs a number of functions, including collection of premium and loss data on every workers' compensation insurance policy, examination of policy documents, inspections of insured businesses, and test audits of insurer payroll audits and claims classification. The WCIRB employs approximately 175 people. The home office is located in San Francisco, California. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Compiles complex data sets for research projects using R, SQL, or comparable software. Downloads data from data warehouses or compiles data from other sources for analysis in spreadsheets (such as Excel) or statistical software (such as R). Proofs and audits data for accuracy, reasonableness, and suitability. Identifies outliers and other anomalous patterns and brings these to the attention of the Vice President, Actuarial Research. Compiles and maintains databases from internal and external sources and updates regularly published reports and analyses. Supervises the development and maintenance of research databases. Assists in proofing accuracy and reasonableness of others’ analyses. Under guidance or supervision of the Vice President, Research, performs thorough actuarial and statistical analyses of various data, applying judgment and discretion in the analyses, in the development of findings and their communication in presentations. Interacts and communicates with representatives of other units of the WCIRB on various research and data-related projects and issues as assigned. Corresponds verbally or in writing with WCIRB members and other customers, such as the insurance department and governmental agencies, as directed. Education, Experience, and Skill Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree preferably in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, data science, economics or related field. Completion Casualty Actuarial Society examinations through CAS Exam 5. Minimum of two years’ demonstrated proficiency as an Actuarial Research Analyst or an equivalent actuarial position. Strong proficiency in programming with a minimum of four years of SQL, R or Python programming experience through a combination of an Actuarial Research Analyst or equivalent role and coursework. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Ability to clearly communicate findings, issues, and recommendations both internally and externally. Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing in a professional manner. Ability to work collaboratively on projects Ability to work independently Physical Demands: Job requires both sitting at a workstation (90%) and moving about the office (10%) Majority of time spent at a PC using keyboard and/or mouse.
