CBP Officer (International Trainer/Advisor)

Summary Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of International Affairs (INA), located in Washington, DC. Learn more about this agency Duties Help This position serves as a CBP Officer within the Office of International Affairs, responsible for advancing CBP's border security and law enforcement training programs with foreign government agencies. By supporting CBP's international mission and priorities, this role directly enhances the agency's ability to secure U.S. borders while facilitating lawful trade and travel worldwide. This position starts at a salary of $147,899.00 (GS-14, Step 01) to$192,275.00 (GS-14, Step 10). Major duties may include but are not limited to:
- Planning, developing, and delivering border security and law enforcement training and technical assistance for foreign government officials, including creating and updating training courses, lesson plans, classroom exercises, and workshop curricula tailored to partner-country border environments.
- Leading teams of CBP and other U.S. experts to review foreign border operations, may conduct capability gap identification and mission analysis (CGAP), identifying problems or gaps in laws, policies, staffing, training, infrastructure, and technology, and designing targeted training and technical assistance to improve those operations.
- Coordinating all parts of international training and advisory programs-including schedules, travel, locations, equipment, materials, and the use of practical exercises and job aids, and ensuring activities align with CBP goals, host-country needs, and broader U.S. government efforts.
- Tracking and reporting on training, advisory, and capability gap analysis efforts by collecting feedback and data, measuring results, preparing written assessments and recommendations, and providing briefings and updates to CBP leadership, U.S. Embassies, and foreign partners.

- You must have taken the required CBP Officer Promotional Assessment component and have a passing Total Score
- Firearm Requirement-This position requires that the incumbent meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996. An applicant whose background includes any of the following will be ineligible for consideration: 1) convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment exceeding one year; 2) has any outstanding warrants or is a fugitive from justice; 3) unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance; 4) adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to a mental institution; 5) illegally or unlawfully in the United States; 6) renounced U. S. citizenship; 7) subject to a court-ordered restraining (protection) order from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner (spouse, former spouse, parent of applicant's child, individual who cohabitates or has cohabitated with the applicant), or child; or 8) convicted under Federal, State, or Tribal Court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence against an intimate partner or child.

- Creating and providing border security or law enforcement training, including helping to write or update course outlines, lesson plans, slides, and hands-on exercises using real-world experience.
- Assisting foreign border, customs, immigration, or law enforcement agencies by reviewing how they operate, identifying problems or gaps, and suggesting practical ways to improve.
- Organizing and running training or advisory projects (including those with multiple countries or agencies), such as setting goals, making schedules, arranging people and resources, monitoring progress, and checking how well the project worked.
- Acting as a subject matter expert on border security, customs, immigration, or related topics by giving advice and briefings, writing reports and other documents, and helping keep policies, procedures, and training materials up to date with how the work is actually done.
- Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
- Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 05/28/2026
- Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
- A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government
- Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university
- Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government
