Guidance Counselor

The Guidance Counselor is responsible to the Director of Pupil Personnel Services (Guidance), as well as to the Department Chairperson in the High School and the Head Counselor in the lower grades for counseling pupils and assisting them to understand their progress in relation to their strengths and weaknesses and to understand themselves in relation to educational and vocational opportunities and requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities The Guidance Counselor shall within his/her certificate and in accord with terms and conditions of employment contained in the negotiated agreements when and if applicable:

• Assemble and interpret information about students.
• Participate in case conferences.
• Conduct conferences with parents to help them better understand and assist with the educational, vocational, personal and social adjustment plans of their children.
• Participate in the school testing program and assist in interpreting test results to parents, students, and teachers.
• Assist the teaching staff in guidance oriented classroom activities.
• Organize and disseminate materials of an occupational and educational nature for student, parent and staff use.
• Conduct group guidance activities when appropriate.
• Participate in research studies when appropriate.
• Utilize the resources of the community in developing and expanding guidance services and activities.
• Perform necessary activities to insure an accurate and orderly scheduling of students.
• Supply information pertaining to the development, progress and needs of the guidance program.
• Maintain necessary reports on activities on forms prescribed by the Director.
• Assist in preparation of information concerning students who are recommended for referral to other school departments and/or outside agencies when appropriate.
• Conduct individual student counseling sessions when appropriate.
• Perform such other duties as assigned by the Director of Pupil Personnel Services or the building Principal.

Qualifications: Possession of a valid New Jersey Educational Services Certificate with Student Personnel Services endorsement. 3 years of successful classroom teaching preferred.
