Laboratory Technicians play a crucial role in the healthcare system by performing a wide range of diagnostic tests that are essential for detecting, diagnosing, and treating diseases. Working in medical laboratories, Laboratory Technicians are responsible for collecting and analyzing biological samples, such as blood, urine, and tissue, using various laboratory techniques and equipment. The accuracy and timeliness of the tests performed by Laboratory Technicians directly impact patient care and treatment decisions. In addition to performing tests, they maintain laboratory equipment, ensure the quality and reliability of results, and adhere to safety and regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities Sample Collection and Processing: Collect, label, and process biological samples, including blood, urine, tissue, and other fluids, following procedures to ensure integrity. Prepare specimens for analysis, including centrifugation, separation, and dilution based on test type. Ensure proper handling and storage to prevent contamination or degradation. Laboratory Testing and Analysis: Perform routine and specialized tests, including blood counts, chemical analyses, and microbiological assays. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as analyzers, microscopes, and spectrophotometers, ensuring accurate calibration. Analyze results and report findings to supervisors or physicians in a timely manner. Collaborate with the team to troubleshoot testing procedures or equipment issues. Quality Control and Assurance: Implement and follow quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of results. Participate in proficiency testing, calibration, and review of results. Document and report deviations or quality control issues to the supervisor. Documentation and Record Keeping: Accurately document all procedures, results, and observations in the LIS or EHR. Maintain detailed records of specimen handling, equipment maintenance, and quality activities in compliance with regulations. Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information. Safety and Compliance: Follow safety protocols and infection control guidelines to minimize exposure risks. Dispose of biohazardous waste and sharps per regulations. Stay informed and comply with federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, CLIA, CAP). Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of equipment. Troubleshoot malfunctions and coordinate repairs with service personnel. Monitor inventory levels of reagents, supplies, and equipment, reordering as needed. Professional Development and Collaboration: Engage in continuing education and professional development activities. Collaborate with laboratory staff, healthcare providers, and departments for efficient operations. Provide guidance and mentorship to new or less experienced personnel. Requirements Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related accredited program. Completion of a clinical laboratory training program is preferred. Licensure/Certification: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by a recognized agency such as ASCP or AMT is preferred. Experience: Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred; new graduates with relevant training are encouraged to apply. Skills: Proficiency in laboratory techniques, specimen collection, preparation, and analysis. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent organizational and time‑management skills. Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. Effective communication with healthcare providers and documentation of findings. Technical aptitude for operating and troubleshooting equipment. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks. Manual dexterity and visual acuity for precise sample handling. Ability to lift and carry laboratory equipment and supplies as needed.
