Unit: School of Dentistry Department: Endodontics Department Summary The Department of Endodontics at Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) School of Dentistry advances oral health through education, research, patient care, and leadership. As part of Virginia’s only dental school—founded in 1893 and affiliated with an academic medical center—it contributes to a long tradition of excellence in dental education and health sciences. The VCU School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 133‑year history, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs, and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and one of the oldest dental schools in the United States founded in 1893. It is one of six health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU. Position Responsibilities Teaching: Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes graduate and professional education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty is expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, teaching, scholarship, and creative expression. Responsibilities include didactic, preclinical, and clinical teaching of predoctoral students and postdoctoral endodontic residents. Mentorship to become the graduate endodontic program director is desired. Research: It is desired that faculty will participate in research in an area of focus consistent with the mission of the VCU School of Dentistry and the Department of Endodontics. The research work may be done collaboratively with other faculty or independently. Service: Faculty is expected to serve on committees within the School of Dentistry and at the University level as assigned. The faculty position will involve participation in professional and community‑related service projects that promote oral health and maintenance of the natural dentition. Clinical: The opportunity to provide clinical endodontic care in the School of Dentistry Faculty Practice or outside practice is available to faculty members who possess the appropriate training and licensure. Approval from the Department Chair of Endodontics and the Dean of the School of Dentistry is required. Required Qualifications DDS or DMD degree (or equivalent) Eligible for licensure in Virginia Completion of an Advanced Education Program in Endodontics (Certificate or Master’s Degree) Board certified or board eligible candidate of the American Board of Endodontics Experience in teaching, residency programs, administration, or other leadership experience Demonstrated desire to mentor future dental practitioners Demonstrated ability to develop such ability that incorporates adult learning theory, evidence‑based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking Demonstrated ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning and discovery Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU For tenure‑eligible positions at the Assistant Professor rank, an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as well as potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department For tenure‑eligible positions at the Associate Professor or Professor level, a well‑developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi‑disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department Preferred Qualifications Prior teaching experience in an endodontic predoctoral and/or graduate program Private practice experience either as a general dentist or as an endodontist Three recent letters of reference, or contact information for at least three references, will be required for consideration.
