What Success Looks Like In This Job The Department considers Highway Workers essential staff, with availability for shift work, on‑call, and stand‑by required—especially during weather events. Overtime is available and periodically required. The Department will consider a range of experience for this vacancy; a candidate’s qualifications will determine the level at which they are hired. Work Levels and Pay Highway Worker I: Entry‑level position. Performs semi‑skilled maintenance and repair duties under direction, mainly in the Public Rights of Way. Pay: $23.26–$32.57. Highway Worker II: Journey level position. Requires two years increasingly responsible experience and advanced DOT‑recognized licensure/certification. Pay: $26.14–$36.59. Highway Worker III: Master level position. Requires four years increasingly responsible experience and advanced DOT‑recognized licensure/certification. Performs skilled maintenance duties involving structures, roads, drainage, traffic signs, and more. Pay: $31.13–$43.59. Examples of Duties Perform maintenance, installation, and repair of structures, roads, drainage systems, traffic signs, pavement markings, traffic lights, and related systems. Operate light and heavy construction equipment—including sweepers, loaders, backhoes, graders, tilt trailers, dump trucks, and bobtail trucks—to support diverse projects. Use hand and power tools and shop equipment; provide general manual labor as assigned. Conduct daily pre‑check and post‑check inspections of equipment and perform preventive maintenance. Load and unload equipment and materials safely, ensuring proper weight distribution and adherence to traffic laws. Operate screeners, shakers, and grinders for recycling and waste processing. Assist in cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and rehabilitating thoroughfares, drainage structures, curb and gutter systems, and more. Fabricate, install, and maintain traffic signs and barricades; paint and maintain crosswalks and permanent traffic markings. Maintain, repair, and install guardrails. Remove traffic obstructions, trim vegetation, and complete road mowing for adequate sight distance. Respond to public inquiries courteously and provide information. Serve on‑call and emergency/disaster duty, including winter snow operations. Plow sand, snow, and ice using specialized equipment; clear foreign materials from roads, ditches, culverts, and creek beds. Ensure all work complies with safety regulations, policies, and specifications; erect and maintain temporary traffic controls, barricades, and warning signs. Participate in activities of other County Departments and Divisions as assigned. Perform any other related duties as required. Qualifications Basic methods and techniques of construction, maintenance, and repair. Follow safety practices and comply with OSHA regulations and environmental laws related to material use and disposal. Understand principles of record keeping and reporting concerning time and materials; read, write, and perform basic math and geometry. Learn traffic control methods and direct vehicular traffic according to MUTCD. Computer skills: knowledge of MS Office and JD Edwards (Time Entry); ability to learn GIS‑based sign management and fabrication software. Work in extreme weather conditions, confined spaces, and around electrical, chemical, and mechanical hazards. Safely operate tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance. Lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 100 lbs. occasionally. Operate a variety of power‑driven equipment. Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Maintain positive working relationships with others. Maintain mental capacity for effective interaction and communication. Maintain physical condition appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities. Qualifications for Highway Worker I Formal or informal education and training that ensures reading and writing at a level necessary for job performance. Preferred: Six months experience in field maintenance, civil construction, snow removal, heavy equipment operation, or related field. License or Certificate: Valid CO Driver’s License; Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required within three months. Qualifications for Highway Worker II Formal or informal education and training ensuring reading and writing at a level necessary for job performance. Required: Two years experience in field maintenance, civil construction, snow removal, heavy equipment operation, or related field. License or Certificate: Valid CO Driver’s License; Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements required within three months. Qualifications for Highway Worker III Formal or informal education and training ensuring reading and writing at a level necessary for job performance. Required: Four years increasingly responsible experience in the same fields. License or Certificate: Valid CO Driver’s License; Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements required within three months; flagger certification required within 90 days. Additional Requirements for All Levels Adams County must conduct random drug screens, background checks, motor vehicle record checks, DOT physical, and criminal background check; a clean record for twelve months is required. Physical Requirements Lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 100 lbs. occasionally. Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, and climb. Work Environment Work outdoors, tolerance for noise, confined spaces, vibration, dust, and mechanical hazards. Must obtain and maintain compliant access to State and County systems. Other Requirements Availability for shift work, on‑call, and stand‑by, especially during weather events and emergencies. Potential holiday coverage. Optional overtime available; periodic mandatory overtime may be required.
