Physician Response Partner Paramedic

University of Utah Health Research

Physician Response Partner Paramedic – Staff Specialist The Physician Response Partner Paramedic is an advanced practice paramedic who partners with a board‑certified EMS physician on the EMS Physician Response Vehicle (PRV). This position provides advanced prehospital critical care in collaboration with the EMS physician at the scene of high‑acuity calls across the regional EMS system. The paramedic functions as the physician’s clinical partner—anticipating needs, performing critical care interventions within the Critical Care Paramedic scope, and assisting the physician with procedures that fall outside the paramedic scope (e.g., surgical airway, escharotomy, field amputation). The paramedic also serves as the primary operator of the PRV, manages on‑board equipment and resources, and ensures seamless integration with frontline EMS, fire, and law enforcement agencies. The paramedic operates under the direct supervision of the EMS physician and within the scope established by the EMS Medical Director and the program’s internal critical care credentialing process. Responsibilities Respond with the EMS physician on the PRV to high‑acuity prehospital calls (trauma, medical, entrapment, mass casualty, pediatric, and other complex scenes) across the regional EMS service area. Function as a clinical partner to the EMS physician—anticipating needs, communicating concerns, advocating for the patient, and providing a second set of trained eyes on scene assessment, patient status, and crew resource management. Perform advanced prehospital critical care interventions consistent with the scope of a Critical Care Paramedic and within the scope established by the EMS Medical Director and internal credentialing, including advanced airway management, mechanical ventilation management, transfusion of blood products, procedural sedation, thoracostomy, central and intraosseous vascular access, and resuscitative interventions. Assist the EMS physician in an assisting capacity only with procedures that fall outside the scope of a Critical Care Paramedic—providing procedural support, equipment preparation, exposure and positioning, medication and blood product administration, monitoring, and documentation. Perform delegated procedures under direct physician supervision and within the scope established by the EMS Medical Director and internal credentialing. Independently prepare, set up, and operate critical care equipment including transport ventilators, infusion pumps, blood/fluid warmers, advanced hemodynamic monitors, and other PRV‑carried devices. Manage, draw up, and administer medications and blood products carried on the PRV per protocol and direct physician orders. Maintain operational readiness of the PRV, completing daily equipment, medication, and blood product inventory checks; restocking and cleaning the vehicle; verifying communications and response systems; and documenting checks per program policy. Serve as the primary operator of the PRV—drive and operate the vehicle to and from scenes safely under both routine and emergency response conditions, in accordance with University of Utah Health, program vehicle operations policy, applicable traffic laws, and Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) standards. Coordinate and communicate seamlessly with frontline EMS crews, fire, law enforcement, air medical resources, and receiving hospital teams; deliver concise clinical handoff and maintain situational awareness throughout the response. Document all patient care, interventions, medications administered, and physician orders accurately and contemporaneously in the electronic patient care record and University of Utah Health EHR. Participate in ongoing internal critical care credentialing, simulation, skills laboratories, and continuing education to maintain procedural competency, even when external critical care certification is not maintained. Participate in continuous quality improvement activities including case review, morbidity and mortality conferences, post‑mission debriefs, protocol development, and program‑related research. Train, precept, and mentor other paramedics, residents, fellows, and learners on advanced prehospital procedures, PRV operations, and team‑based critical care delivery. Maintain scene and personal safety awareness at all times; support the physician in scene size‑up, hazard identification, and incident command coordination. Other duties as assigned by the EMS Medical Director, program leadership, or designee. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Expert‑level prehospital clinical judgment, assessment, and decision‑making in high‑acuity and time‑critical situations. Competency with critical care equipment and procedures, including transport ventilators, infusion pumps, blood product administration, advanced airway management, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring. Ability to function as a true clinical partner to a physician—anticipating needs, communicating directly and respectfully, and contributing to shared decision‑making while maintaining role clarity. Human relations and communication skills with physicians, frontline EMS partners, hospital teams, allied public safety, patients, and families. Calm and competent functioning in austere, uncontrolled, and high‑stress prehospital environments. Knowledge of life span growth and development and the ability to assess and provide care across the age continuum per departmental policy. Ability to maintain crew resource management principles, scene safety, and situational awareness. Ability to function during regularly scheduled 12‑hour or alternative shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with rapid response readiness. Ability to maintain all department and organization‑required training, credentialing, and competencies by expected due dates. Ability to lift and carry equipment of varying weight and configuration in challenging environments. Minimum Qualifications Current RQI Healthcare Provider ALS eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 90 days of hire). Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire). Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah. Current RQI Healthcare Provider PALS eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 90 days of hire). Minimum of five (5) years of full‑time field paramedic experience. Prior or current certification as a Critical Care Paramedic (e.g., CCP‑C, CCEMT‑P) and/or prior or current Flight Paramedic certification (e.g., FP‑C), with documented clinical experience in that role. Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians – Paramedic (NRP) certification. Current RQI Healthcare Provider BLS, ACLS, and PALS eCredentials through the University of Utah Health RQI system, obtained within the timeframes required by University of Utah Health policy. Successful completion of the program’s internal Critical Care / Advanced Practice Paramedic credentialing curriculum within the defined onboarding period; ongoing maintenance of internal credentialing thereafter. Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured under the University of Utah fleet policy; acceptable motor vehicle record. Current Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) certification, or completion within the program‑defined onboarding period; ongoing maintenance of EVOC certification as required by program policy. Preferred Qualifications Current FP‑C, CCP‑C, or CCEMT‑P certification. Experience in helicopter EMS (HEMS), critical care ground transport, tactical EMS, or wilderness medicine. Prior experience working alongside physicians in a prehospital, critical care transport, or emergency department setting. Additional certifications such as TP‑C (Tactical Paramedic – Certified) or C‑NPT (Certified Neonatal/Pediatric Transport). Bachelor’s degree in EMS, healthcare, or a related field. Working Conditions Work performed in austere and uncontrolled prehospital environments including roadways, residences, industrial sites, wilderness, and mass casualty incidents, as well as inside the PRV and at receiving hospitals. Exposure to weather extremes, bodily fluids, infectious disease, hazardous materials, and other prehospital hazards is expected. Position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and consistently requires lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving medical equipment or patients while providing care. Requires availability for 12‑hour or alternative shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, with rapid mobilization in response to dispatch.
