Director of Finance

The Director of Finance is an executive finance leader responsible for providing strategic financial leadership, business model innovation, and forward-looking partnership across the Museum. Reporting to the Director & CEO, this position oversees all accounting and finance operations while serving as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and the Board in support of organizational strategy, financial sustainability, and responsible growth. This role is intentionally designed as a succession opportunity. Working closely alongside the outgoing Chief Financial & Operating Officer through a structured transition, the successful candidate will be positioned to assume executive financial leadership following the planned retirement of the current CFOO at the end of 2027.

The ideal candidate will be both rigorous with financial accounting and growth-oriented in approaching the Museum's business and operating model. The Director of Finance directly leads the Museum's Finance Department and partners closely with the Chief Development Officer and the Director & CEO, as well as other senior leaders, to strengthen financial planning, maximize philanthropic impact, evaluate emerging revenue opportunities, and support innovative models that advance the Museum's mission.

The Director of Finance works closely with the leadership team, departmental leaders, and the Board of Directors to shape the financial and operational expectations for the museum and to oversee execution against those expectations.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or business administration required, master's degree in related field preferred. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) certification is highly desirable. Proven experience (10+ years of demonstrated experience in financial management, strategic planning and operational leadership, with leadership or governance experience in a museum, cultural institute, or similar sector preferred).

Strong knowledge of financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and navigate complexity. Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of collaboration and management of strategic initiatives. Excellent organizational and project management skills. Experience with the development of data infrastructure to dynamically measure key performance indicators. Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees. Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate. Demonstrated experience in implementing process improvements and optimizing operational efficiency. Excellent leadership and team management skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative, agile and dynamic environment. Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Expert with Microsoft Office Suite or related software and proficiency with use of AI for ethical and appropriate applications.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Standard office environment with related phone, computer, and printer noise. Position requires ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, printer, and phone system. Support given to various departments across campus may result in occasional exposure to uncomfortable weather conditions.
