Optometrist
The Optometrist for the Mobile Eye Clinic provides high-quality, compassionate vision care to patients across the communities served by Four Rivers Community Health Center. This position supports the mission of delivering accessible, affordable healthcare by extending eye care services through mobile outreach. The Optometrist is responsible for conducting comprehensive eye exams, diagnosing and managing ocular diseases, prescribing corrective lenses, and collaborating with the broader healthcare team to ensure continuity of care. This role combines clinical excellence with community engagement-bringing essential vision services to schools, rural areas, and underserved populations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations and visual assessments for patients of all ages.
- Diagnose and manage ocular diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and infections.
- Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other optical aids as appropriate.
- Provide patient education regarding eye health, preventive care, and treatment options.
- Refer patients for advanced ophthalmologic or medical care as clinically indicated.
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Mobile Clinic and Outreach Operations
- Provide care aboard the Mobile Eye Clinic and at designated community sites, schools, and partner organizations.
- Work collaboratively with the Driver/PSR and Optician to ensure efficient clinic setup, patient flow, and safety.
- Participate in scheduling coordination, equipment setup, and breakdown as needed.
- Ensure all mobile clinic operations comply with regulatory, infection control, and safety standards.
- Support community vision screening and outreach events that promote access to care.
Team Collaboration and Leadership
- Collaborate with primary care providers and other disciplines to support integrated patient care within the FQHC model.
- Mentor optometry students during clinical rotations, providing guidance on patient care, examination techniques, and professional best practices.
- Serve as a clinical resource to optical and support staff, fostering a culture of teamwork and continuous learning.
- Participate in clinical quality improvement initiatives, training, and compliance activities.
- Provide feedback to administration regarding mobile operations, equipment needs, and community engagement opportunities.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited optometry program required.
- Current, unrestricted license to practice Optometry in the State of Missouri required (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a clinical setting preferred.
- Experience providing care in a community health, FQHC, or mobile clinic environment preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong diagnostic and clinical skills with commitment to evidence-based care.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a patient-centered approach.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a mobile, team-based environment.
- Comfort using EHR systems and digital diagnostic equipment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
