Job Overview Full‑time Life Safety Specialist position in the Fire Protection Services Department at ChristianaCare, Newark, DE. Responsible for maintaining and ensuring safety of fire protection and life safety systems across multi‑location facilities. Primary Responsibilities Inspect, test, maintain, and develop corrective measures for fire alarm, suppression, and life safety systems and associated components. Inspect, maintain, and document portable fire extinguishers and emergency eye wash stations. Conduct and assist with building and department fire drills; educate caregivers on fire response procedures. Perform routine building safety inspections and document findings. Inspect construction areas for compliance and document results. Maintain documentation for all testing, inspection, and maintenance to meet Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and Joint Commission requirements. Respond to, investigate, and take action during fire/smoke events, odor calls, hazardous material incidents, confined space rescues, medical assists, and other emergencies. Participate in the weekly on‑call rotation of the Fire Protection team. Develop and present educational materials to caregivers. Perform other related duties as needed. Education, Experience, and Certifications Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection or related engineering discipline preferred. Minimum 4 years experience in the Fire Protection and Life Safety industry preferred. NICET LevelII Certificate in Testing & Inspection of Water‑Based Fire Suppression Systems, or ability to obtain within two years. State of Delaware Fire Suppression License, or ability to obtain. State of Delaware Fire Extinguisher License, or ability to obtain within one year. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted where approved. All certifications and licenses must be maintained and renewed as required. Special Requirements Day shift 7:30am – 4:00pm. Must work off‑hours or weekends for training, testing, fire drills, and maintenance. Participation in the Incipient Fire Brigade, Confined Space Rescue Team, and the HAZMAT Response Team required. Must complete Confined Space Rescue and HAZMAT Technician training within 12months of hire and attend annual refreshers. Pass OSHA‑required medical examination and fit test for respirator and SCBA use. Maintain an acceptable driver’s license and driving record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Perform assigned work safely, following department safety rules. Identify, correct, and report unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations. Prioritize tasks, select appropriate tools and materials, and take safety precautions. Knowledge of life safety systems, electrical or mechanical design, installation, and acceptance testing. Knowledge of National Fire Codes, Joint Commission standards, and OSHA regulations. Knowledge of the Incident Command System. Respond, mitigate, and resolve emergency incidents quickly, efficiently, and safely. Use computer software (e‑mail, word processing, testing documentation, incident reporting). Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Analyze situations objectively and solve problems. Work independently, demonstrate initiative, build teamwork, possess a positive attitude, and adapt to learning opportunities.
