Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (Multicraft) Columbia, SC, United States Job Description ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble. Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts. Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections. Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements. Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments. Repairs or replaces defective parts, installs special functional and structural parts in devices, lubricates and cleans parts, starts devices to test performance. Sets up and operates lathe, drill press, grinder, band saw, milling machine, welder, and other metalworking tools to make and repair parts. Moves/positions/replaces heavy equipment using forklifts, pry bars, and chain falls; pushes toolbox to work areas. Carrying, lifting, and transporting parts to and from work locations and maintenance shop by hand or mechanical means. Uses personal protective equipment: cut‑resistant gloves and sleeves, heat‑resistant gloves and sleeves, safety glasses, goggles, face shield, ear plugs, and steel‑toed shoes. Uses hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, punches, screwdrivers, pliers, and pipe wrenches on a continuous basis; tasks range from fine adjustments to strong-force operations. Performs plant startup tasks, energizes equipment, ensures operation. Installs power‑supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment (conveyors, programmable controllers). Connects power‑supply wires and cables between machines and equipment. Replaces faulty electrical components on machines such as relays, switches, motors, and positions sensing devices. Diagnoses and repairs or replaces faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards; replaces electric motor bearings and rewires motors. Diagnoses and replaces faulty mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components of machines and equipment. Cleans work area, tools, and equipment. Utilizes computer for work‑order entry and completion status. Diagnoses malfunctioning apparatus such as transformers, motors, lighting fixtures; replaces damaged or broken wire and cables. Tests malfunctioning machinery and discusses malfunction with maintenance manager. The noise level is usually loud (95dB). The employee works on/near machinery running up to 1,000fpm with steel rolls, knives, slitter blades, belts, and die cutters; close proximity to electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, chemical, and thermal energy sources. Exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, and vibration is frequent. Working areas may be at high temperatures (340–370°F) or low temperatures (50–110°F). Walking across narrow conveyor platforms and proximity to forklift traffic are required. Physical demands include lifting up to 100lb, standing, walking, using hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing, and operating ladders and stairs. The Skills You Will Bring High school diploma or GED and experience in general machine and fitting shop practice, welding, maintenance troubleshooting, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems, and pipefitting. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; communicate effectively. Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, units of weight measurement, volume, and distance; use of tape measure, micrometer, dial indicators, pi tapes, and manometers. Problem‑solving in varied and nonstandard situations; interpreting written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions.
