Summary
The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), McGuire/Richmond VA Medical Center (VAMC)/ (VISN 6) Department of Neurology. The successful candidate will serve as a Neurologist and provide and maintain a high level of quality inpatient and outpatient care services in all aspects of acute and chronic neurology and movement disorders.
Duties
This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2026 or until all positions are filled. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications will be 15 June 2026, with subsequent cut‑off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred to at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as‑needed basis until positions are filled.
The incumbent’s duties include provision of neurologic evaluation and treatment of Veterans with compassion on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, education and counseling of Veterans and their families on medical conditions/treatments, and BLS certification is required. The Incumbent shall keep all information concerning VA beneficiaries confidential.
- Clinical duties include overseeing the Neurology Consult service and supervising residents, medical students, inpatient procedures, and teaching of housestaff and students.
- Expanded use of clinical video telehealth (CVT)/electronic consultation (eConsult) to improve access to neurological care, foster education and quality improvement.
- Maintain current knowledge and skills, deliver interventions throughout the full spectrum of neurological care, and uphold diagnostic and therapeutic acumen.
- Serve as a leader and/or active member on Medical Center committees as requested.
- Provide expanded access to services during normal tour or on call periods, participate in neurology inpatient consults, neurology clinic, and take call as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Contribute to the achievement of quality care standards, write orders for diagnostic testing, prescribe medications, consult with specialty services, and utilize electronic medical records.
- Provide outpatient care in accordance with professional standards, core values, and commitment to service excellence.
- Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with neurological diseases according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques.
- Collaborate closely with other Neurologists in a collaborative care model.
- Perform neurological evaluations, patient examinations, diagnosis, consultations, and teaching rotating residents, fellows, and medical students. Perform administrative components such as documentation of progress notes, operation reports, discharge summaries, and electronic orders.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship: non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- All applicants are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment; refusal will result in denial.
- A drug test is required and the position is subject to random drug testing.
- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Subject to background/security investigation.
- Complete an online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification; REAL‑ID compliant driver's licenses or state‑issued identification cards are required as of 7 May 2025.
- Pass a pre‑employment physical examination.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- May be required to serve a probationary period.

- Probationary period of 2 years with evaluation of fitness and public interest; certification in writing is required to continue employment after probation.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below. Additional requirements may apply.
Basic Requirements
- United States Citizenship.
- Doctor of Medicine or equivalent in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an approved school.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a US State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: completion of a VA‑approved accredited core specialty program leading to board certification (or equivalent).
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience
- Completion of a Movement Disorder Fellowship or additional training beyond residency.
- Experience or interest in movement disorder research and teaching.
- Experience in administration, managing multiple providers, workflow efficiency, budgeting, and team collaboration.
Physical Requirement
All individuals applying must meet Physician Qualifications as described in VA Directive and Handbook 5019 and be physically able to perform the duties of the position. A pre‑placement physical examination is required prior to appointment.
Education
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted.
- Foreign medical graduates: confirmation that the medical school meets Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements for year graduated.
