Manager Spiritual Care Services

Job Requirements

Under limited supervision of the Director of Spiritual Care, the Manager Spiritual Care Services is responsible for the development, implementation, and integration of spiritual care services. This role provides spiritual care to patients, families, and staff as needed, as an adjunct to the services provided by the staff chaplains, recruits religious volunteers, ensures effective availability of 24/7 spiritual care, and serves as a liaison between community clergy and hospital staff and patients.

Primary Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.
• Manages and leads a team of spiritual care professionals, including chaplains and volunteers, to include team member development, team member evaluations, education, onboarding, among other responsibilities.
• Provides spiritual and emotional support to patients and their families as well as staff members during their healthcare journey.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to address the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and maintain accurate and confidential records of the spiritual care services provided.
• Develops and implements spiritual care programs and services that align with UMMS' mission, vision and values.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives to continuously improve spiritual care services.
• Collaborates with community organizations and religious groups to provide support and resources to patients and families.
• Stays current with research and best practices in spiritual care and integrate them into the organization's programs and services.
• Fosters a culture of inclusivity and diversity in spiritual care services.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Work Experience

Education & Experience - Required
• Master's degree in divinity or a related theological field from an accredited college, university, or seminary is required.
• Ordination, rostering, or licensing as a religious leader in his/her faith tradition or equivalent designation is required.
• Letter of good standing from his/her faith tradition is required.
• Minimum of four units (Level I&II) of Clinical Pastoral Education from an accredited ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) center is required.
• Certification as a Board-Certified Chaplain (BCC) by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) or cognate group is required within five (5) years of hire. Maintenance of certification as a Board-Certified Chaplain is required.
• Minimum five (5) years of experience as a professional hospital chaplain, with demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience is required.
• Adherence to Common Standards for Professional Chaplains is required.
• Demonstrated leadership or charge nurse experience.

Education & Experience - Preferred
• Five (5) years spiritual care leadership experience preferred.
• Three (3) years of parish/congregational experience is preferred.
• Epic EMR experience preferred.

• Knowledge of theology, scripture, counseling skills, comparative religions, and church practices. General knowledge of psychology and healthcare field.
• Ability to handle confidential issues with the utmost integrity and discretion.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and basic computer skills are necessary to work with various hospital departments, employees, patients, and families.
