Lead Nurse, Registered Nurse III, RN III - Gilliam Youth Services Center

Summary of Position Provide leadership in clinical oversight, staff consultation, & training to ensure consistent & compliant healthcare delivery across facilities. The role contributes to quality assurance, policy implementation, & program development efforts, ensuring medical services are delivered effectively, efficiently, & in alignment with statewide standards and the DYS treatment model. Specific Job Duties Management / Clinical Direction / Clinical Supervision Provide clinical & administrative leadership for nursing staff, health care technicians, students, & orientees through effective delegation, assignment oversight, & guidance on clinical interventions. Orients new employees & serves as a preceptor for students; primary point of contact for academic institutions supporting RN, NP, & PA student placements; leads regular staff meetings; completes peer reviews to promote clinical performance improvement. Manage personnel functions including hiring, scheduling, timekeeping, performance evaluations, co‑supervision for mid‑level providers, and corrective actions as needed. Address interpersonal conflicts & investigate complaints or grievances from staff, youth, families, & stakeholders. Medical Quality Assurance, Compliance & Data Reporting Direct & monitor quality assurance projects by reviewing medical documents (medication administration records, incident reports, pharmacy invoices, EHR documentation) and ensuring NCCHC & DYS standards are met; formulate corrective action plans as required. Collect & report monthly statistical data required for Behavioral Health & Medical Services; monitor compliance review standards and maintain NCCHC folders for state readiness. Review policies & procedures; collaborate with facility administrators & supervisors to develop or revise medical implementation procedures; complete medical logs pertinent to the department. Clinical Duties, Medication & Treatment Administer nursing care & provide youth education for routine, urgent, & emergent medical situations. Obtain lab & diagnostic procedures ordered by medical providers, review results, and notify providers when indicated. Initiate nursing/medical treatment plans for youth with special health care needs; review & revise plans as needed. Document all encounters in EMR & maintain confidentiality per HIPAA regulations. Respond to emergent situations (Code Blue, Code Red), administer CPR/First Aid, initiate a 911 call if required. Transcribe & process provider medication orders, including preparation & administration of medications (e.g., intramuscular injections) following prescribed directives; maintain & update Medication Administration Records (MAR); conduct routine audits for accuracy. Deliver medications & medical supplies; evaluate youth who may be confined to specific buildings or rooms on campus; review immunization status and administer vaccines per provider recommendations & CDC guidelines. Other Duties as Assigned Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications below to continue in the selection process for this position. Education / Licensure / Certification / Experience Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact. AND three (3) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Substitutions Appropriate education may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Preferred Qualifications Experience with adolescent health care. Experience with mental health nursing. Experience with correctional nursing. Relatable experience as a current or previous State of Colorado employee. Highly Desirable Competencies Knowledge of current medications, administration, their actions, and use. Ability to work in collaborative relationships with other professionals to achieve interdisciplinary goals set for clients. Ability to assess & coordinate community health care services to meet client & family needs. Ability to collect, record, & interpret data concisely and accurately. Ability to self‑regulate emotions when provoked or when working under conditions of stress. Conditions of Employment Minimum age 21 years with no felony convictions or history of domestic violence. Full background check required: CDHS employees (all direct contact with vulnerable persons) will undergo CBI name check, fingerprint check, ICON Colorado court database, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, professional license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails check, CAPS, MVR, and drug screen. State of Colorado residency required at time of application and throughout employment. Valid Colorado driver’s license; ability to work shift work as required. Essential Services designation – required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services. Travel may be required to other DYS Youth Centers, meetings, and training. Exposure to hazardous materials (medical waste) subject to explanation. Must possess a current CPR card and perform CPR compressions & ventilations per CPR guidelines. Continued employment contingent upon successful completion of the DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO) & mandatory annual training. Use of the Diana Screen® sexual risk screening tool may be used as part of selection.
