Senior Grounds Equipment Operator

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform the skilled operation of light and medium powered grounds equipment, large and small gang mowers, tractors, backhoes, trucks and trailers; perform grounds maintenance work.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are characterized by the regular skilled operation of large turf maintenance equipment and a wide range of grounds construction equipment, as well as the performance of general groundskeeping duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Perform skilled operation of large gang mowers, power mowers, tractors, skip loaders, backhoes, augers, aerators, forklifts, trucks, chain saws, power edgers, power trimmers and other grounds maintenance and construction equipment. Use tractor attachments as the job demands. Service and make repairs to grounds equipment as needed. Fill, drag, level, roll, smooth and prepare ground for planting of lawns; level ground and build mounds for athletic fields. Haul dirt, trash, fertilizer and other materials; adjust lawn mowers; mow lawns and fields. Mix and apply chemicals used for weed control. Prune trees and shrubs. Install landscaped areas, working from blueprints or rough sketches; line athletic fields. Fertilize lawns, using and mixing chemicals; drag infields; perform groundskeeping custodial duties. Load equipment on trailers, pull trailers to work sites and unload equipment at work sites. Operate District vehicles.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF

Operation, use and maintenance of large gang mowers and other powered grounds equipment, tractors and attachments. Methods, materials and tools used in groundskeeping work. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

ABILITY TO

Perform skilled grounds equipment operation work, including the operation of tractors, trucks, large power gang mowers and attachments. Perform general groundskeeping work. Use herbicides and fertilizers in an appropriate and safe manner. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to: experience performing regularly scheduled operation of large power gang mowers and other grounds construction equipment.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid California driver's license. Incumbent will be involved in field work which requires travel in a vehicle to various sites. Incumbents may be required to wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and breathing apparatus.

Outside environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Seasonal heat and cold.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Seeing to read a variety of materials. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects. Climbing ladders.

HAZARDS

Extreme weather conditions. Exposure to harsh substances and foul odors. Working around and with machinery having moving parts. Working at heights on rooftops, ladders or on equipment. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Positions in this job classification typically work 40 hours/week for 12 months/year. The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission. Applicants selected for permanent or substitute assignments are required to pay for fingerprinting services and obtain Tuberculosis results prior to beginning work. Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits unless proof of alternate coverage is provided. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The balance of health benefit costs are paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Dental coverage is provided free of charge for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more.
