Salary: $107,000 - 147,000 per year Requirements:

• Demonstrated experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining complex production systems, including the ability to navigate unfamiliar codebases, assess architecture, and evaluate automated testing.
• Recent, substantial hands-on software engineering experience and a commitment to continued technical work.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineers in a Technical Lead, Team Lead, Engineering Manager, or comparable role, with a record of improving engineering practices and supporting professional growth.
• Extensive experience developing and evaluating automated testing strategies, including understanding code coverage and familiarity with mutation testing or comparable test-validation techniques.
• Practical experience supporting production environments, including observability, monitoring, alerting, incident response, root cause analysis, and sustainable corrective action.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted or AI-first software development, balancing AI use with technical oversight, code quality, and reliable testing.
• Strong working knowledge of Git, CI/CD, automated testing, cloud infrastructure, and infrastructure as code.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical concepts, documenting decisions, and collaborating across multinational and multilingual teams.
• Preferred: Experience developing Team Leads or first-line Engineering Managers and building strong engineering teams.
• Preferred: Advanced proficiency in TypeScript, Rust, or C++.
• Preferred: Experience with industrial, manufacturing, device-integrated, or production-printing software.
• Preferred: Experience with licensing, entitlement management, subscription, e-commerce, or payment-processing systems.

• Lead, mentor, and develop two Team Leads, and coach engineers through hands-on collaboration, AI adoption, and code and test reviews.
• Coordinate shared architecture, cloud infrastructure, and design specialists by setting priorities, defining scope, and ensuring deliverables meet expectations.
• Enable engineers and Team Leads to make independent technical decisions within established guidelines, promoting accountability, ownership, and growth.
• Participate in major architectural decisions, documenting the rationale and assigning accountable owners.
• Set code-review standards for critical systems and high-risk changes, focusing human review where it is essential and avoiding unnecessary approvals.
• Evaluate automated test effectiveness and reliability using mutation testing, test regeneration, and other validation methods.
• Establish standards for AI-assisted development covering code quality, testing, and technical accountability.
• Design, develop, and improve engineering systems, internal tools, testing infrastructure, and reference implementations.
• Lead technical investigations, provide practical solutions to inform architectural decisions, and resolve complex technical challenges and persistent defects.
• Track engineering delivery, project progress, technical challenges, and potential risks; identify risks and recommend actionable solutions.
• Participate in production release approvals, lead incident response, and ensure significant incidents receive thorough, blameless root cause analysis.
• Assign ownership of corrective actions and verify that improvements are implemented.

More:

We build software for industrial printers producing vehicle wraps, large signs, textiles, packaging prototypes, and fine art reproductions. Onyx Graphics, a Canon subsidiary, is growing its engineering team and seeking an Engineering Manager to provide day-to-day technical leadership, help our Director focus on broader strategy and portfolio management, and guide our AI-first development while remaining hands-on. Our cloud products are in development alongside established systems, and the team is small enough for your work to be visible in the product. The role is based in Midvale, Utah, with hybrid or remote arrangements available subject to management approval and business needs. The work includes an on-call rotation and occasional test-lab visits to validate software with physical devices; standard office and engineering tools are used. We are an equal opportunity employer and provide reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable laws. Benefits include a 401(k) with a 6% match, health, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D and pet insurance, paid time off and holidays, flexible scheduling, training, and additional leave and support programs.
