Senior Registered Nurse - Oncology

Work Hours: 12hr shifts Employment Type: Part Time (must work a minimum of 24hrs per week) Location Parkland: 14th FLR BLK 400 Shift

NIGHT SHIFT

Primary Purpose The RN is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery that focuses on a particular patient population(s)/specific health conditions, by the health care team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to health care personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition and the competencies of the employee. Minimum Specifications Education Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Experience Must have two years of nursing experience. Equivalent Education and/or Experience None. Certification/Registration/Licensure Must have current valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, or valid Compact RN license. Must have current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network. Must hold an Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy certificate within six months of placement. Skills or Special Abilities Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards. Demonstrates ability to safely and successfully perform all responsibilities of Registered Nurse II-Oncology Services. Comprehensive understanding of chemotherapy indications and side effects. Able to start and discontinue intravenous access and maintain central line devices. Provides continuous assessment and consults with other team members as required, demonstrating patient‑centered care. Exercises independent judgment in providing nursing care. Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Communicates effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provides direction to non‑nursing staff, serves as a preceptor, and may act as a Charge Nurse on rotation. Prepares and conducts in‑service educational programs. Possesses acceptable knowledge of nursing standards of care for specialty care area. Successfully completes the oncology orientation to all applicable competencies. Responsibilities Serves as a patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural preferences. Maintains positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders and serves as a resource for patients, families, and the healthcare team. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines (including EMTALA, Order of Productive Custody, Memorandum of Transfer, APOWW) and ensures compliance. Develops internal controls to promote adherence to state/federal laws and accreditation requirements. Performs patient assessments meeting admission and discharge criteria, provides safe medication administration using the six rights, performs point‑of‑care monitoring, and demonstrates safe infection control practices. Completes accurate documentation in patient care records and hospital documents. Educates patients, families, and significant others on cancer care, therapies, side effects, interventions, and prevention. Provides documented patient teaching and discharge planning. Collaborates with wound, stoma, and ENT nurses for wound, colostomy, and tracheotomy care as directed. Manages triage for patients and other stakeholders, optimizing navigation of the healthcare system. Sought guidance from experienced staff as needed; may give direction to non‑nursing staff and participate in information exchanges that support Oncology Services’ standards. Identifies ways to improve work processes and enhance patient and customer satisfaction; implements recommendations and monitors results. Serves as a preceptor or trainer for newer nursing staff. Acts as a Charge Nurse on rotation as necessary. Models oncology nursing best practices and serves as a resource to unit nurses. Stays abreast of current developments, advancements, and trends in nursing practice through continuing education, conferences, and specialty organizations. Maintains Texas RN licensure, any additional required licensures/certifications, and Commission on Cancer specific certification or meets continuing education requirements (12 oncology‑related CE hours per year or 36 CE hours each accreditation cycle).
