Summary High‑quality Spanish/English transcription and translation services for a variety of litigative activities within the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of California. This career ladder position is at GS‑12, with earlier grades possible. Responsibilities Serve as an expert source on Spanish language, including idiomatic expressions, regionalisms, colloquialisms, and technical terms. Prepare certified translations of court documents, law enforcement reports, accounting/financial documents, vital records, forensic reports, medical reports, text messages, prison records, treaties, statutes, regulations, and other official documents within tight deadlines. Prepare certified transcriptions and translations of post‑arrest interviews, intercepted phone calls, body‑wire recordings, Port‑of‑Entry videos, immigration court proceedings, jail calls, and witness interviews. Provide summary and sight translations to Assistant United States Attorneys. Review and evaluate transcriptions and translations prepared by opposing counsel. Provide interpretation services to USAO personnel at meetings and during case‑related activities in criminal and civil matters. Perform administrative and other related duties as assigned. Qualifications GS‑9: Meet at least one of the following: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑7 in translation, including use of AI or computer‑assisted translation tools. Master’s degree or two full years of graduate study in translation, linguistics, Spanish language, or a closely related field. A combination of experience and graduate education that together equates to 100% of the qualification requirement. GS‑11: Meet at least one of the following: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑7 with advanced techniques, certification, and the ability to produce legally admissible translations and transcriptions. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of graduate study in a related field. A combination of experience and graduate education totaling 100% of the qualification requirement. GS‑12: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑11, including advanced transcription, rapid familiarity with complex requests, term‑base management, and the ability to testify in federal court. Select Placement Factor Must be certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). Submit a copy of the certification with your application. Conditions of Employment U.S. citizen or national. Pass required background adjudication, fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Registered for Selective Service, if required. Possibility of a one‑year probationary period.
