Assistant Nurse

As a member of the educational team, this position promotes an atmosphere for healthy learning by encouraging a state of physical and emotional wellness for all students. The Assistant Nurse provides the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absences due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the Maumee City School District's schools.

Essential Functions:

1. Assist with primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of disease and other health problems by observation, assessment, screenings, referral, and follow-up. This includes health screenings as required by the State of Ohio.
2. Respond to accidents and health emergencies and administer first aid when needed.
3. Dispense medication to students as needed.
4. Support classroom instruction on medical, health, and nutrition issues.
5. Assist with the implementation of health policies and health-related forms.
6. Coordinate with the building administration to implement policy on exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
7. Oversee building cumulative health records on students and consult on other health-related records as needed.
8. Collaborate with office personnel on reviewing the entry of students' health records, advising parents, and reporting known immunization violations to the principal.
9. Keep staff and administration informed of student health conditions.
10. Remain current with common medication usage and communicate with staff.
11. Communicate with parents regarding student health/medical issues.
12. Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters.
13. Work with students and parents regarding an understanding of health problems or student medical-related needs, and assist with obtaining needed services.
14. Work in cooperation with the local health department and refer students and families as needed for home visits.
15. Prepare and submit reports for the superintendent and other agencies as required.
16. Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary and safe conditions in the school.
17. Participate in professional development and training programs.
18. Serve as a resource and advisory person in areas of health, health education, and health careers for students and staff.
19. Assist with IAT and IEP meetings and participate in multi-factored evaluation teams for students suspected of other health impaired or orthopedically handicapped, or for any student with health or medical issues.
20. Serve as a member of a multi-factored evaluation team for students applying for home-bound instruction.
21. Assist building administration with child abuse reporting and prevention.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings; help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
2. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District; and maintain confidentiality of all medical and other sensitive information pertaining to students and staff.
3. Perform other tasks related to the Assistant Nurse duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Educational Services, Assistant Superintendent, and/or Superintendent of Schools.
