Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Medicine

Special Information

  • NAU is currently engaged in transitioning to a new employment category called University Staff , which aligns the current Classified Staff , Service Professional , and Administrator classifications into a single, unified employment group. As a result, while this position is currently classified as Service Professional , effective July 1, 2026 , this position will be automatically transitioned to the University Staff category.
  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • This position is posted as Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Medicine, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Associate Athletic Director.
  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Department/College


The Northern Arizona University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 15 men's and women's NCAA Division-I programs with more than 350 student-athlete participants. The university is a member of the Big Sky Conference for all sports with the exception of women's swimming and diving, which competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).

About the Position


The Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Medicine is responsible for the health care of all the student-athletes involved in the Intercollegiate Athletic Program. Plans, administers, and directs individual contributors, Assistant Directors, and Managers within assigned areas for the Athletics Department. In partnership with the Vice President/Athletic Director, develops and implements organizational goals and objectives and ensures that operational procedures are compliant with university standards and NCAA and conference rules and regulations to promote an effective workplace.

Responsibilities Include


70% - Administrative Support

  • Responsible for the health care of all the student athletes involved in the Intercollegiate Athletic Program.
  • Primary responsibilities involve providing the highest quality and most current health care for the student athletes, communication between the Team Physician, coaches, student athletes and staff; management, supervision, and evaluation of sports medicine staff; administrative oversight of all sports medicine program responsibilities.
  • Assigns sports supervision to the other sports medicine staff.
  • Provides prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of student athletes' injuries in a manner that best reflects the mission and goals of the department and University.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to all service providers working with the student athletes.
  • Specific and deliberate collaboration with the strength and conditioning staff to enhance programming and develop injury prevention strategies.
  • Maintain an accurate supply inventory, manage departmental budget, purchasing and ordering authority.
  • Provide athletic training primary care for 1-2 sport programs.
  • Serves as primary liaison with academic programs as they integrate with Sports Medicine.
  • Partner with Director of Athletics and designees to develop student care enhancing and budget relieving partnerships.
  • Senior level participation in Executive Leadership Team.
15% - Compliance
  • Service on committees and work groups as assigned.
  • Serve as Chair of Michael E. Nesbitt Athletic Training Endowment committee.
  • Supervise all alcohol, banned substance, and illegal substances education and testing programs.
  • Facilities standards management and standard training of all staff (OSHA, Bloodborne Pathogen Training, Clery Act, Title IX, etc.).
  • Education of staff, professional development, and continuing education management.
  • Main point of collaboration with all support services, specifically on health and wellbeing education for student athletes.
  • Develops and maintains emergency action plans for all practice and competition venues in accordance with university risk management guidelines and state regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate certifications to perform job responsibilities.
10% - Supervision
  • Supervises the overall day to day operation of the sports medicine program including maintaining all facilities and management of equipment.
  • Supervises, manages, and evaluates medical services coordinator and supervises all aspects of athletic department management of secondary insurance policy, claims processing, and billing matters.
  • Provide senior level oversight of some or all of the following areas: nutrition, strength and conditioning, Treharne Laboratory, Mental Health.
5% - Other
  • Other duties as assigned by the VP.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor's degree.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • NATA/BOC certification and current CPR/AED/First Aid certification is required.
  • Eligible for Arizona state licensure.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master's, PhD, etc.) or other professional certification.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience
  • 7 years of relevant experience

Compensation


Salary range begins at $89,551. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report . The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
