Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner APRN Role The Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute seeks a dynamic Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner APRN to join the Cardiac Surgery department. Under the direction of a cardiothoracic surgeon, the Provider is responsible for performing duties including but not limited to: first assisting cardiovascular surgical procedures, endoscopic vessel harvesting, preoperative history and physical examination, postoperative care in outpatient settings, and patient education. The successful candidate will support patient care from admission to discharge in service, Step-Down, and ICU. Duties include managing multiple patients with varied critical illness, comprehensive physical assessments, interpretation of diagnostic results, hemodynamic/ventilator management, and invasive procedures. Extensive training and supervision are provided for skills such as arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, feeding tubes, and removal of pacer wires. Role Scope In consultation with physicians and care team members, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners develop plans for further evaluation of health needs, including referrals to other team members or specialists. They provide appropriate treatment for problems within their scope of practice as designated by protocols and refer outside of scope to a physician when needed. They are part of a multidisciplinary team that plans and delivers care under the direction of attending cardiac surgeons in collaboration with cardiologists and consultants.
