ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

SUMMARY: The Cal Poly Pomona Foundation is currently seeking one undergraduate student assistant to support protein research projects in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, including the Sorghum Protein Research Projects.

This position will assist with one or more of the following activities: protein extraction from different plant-based sources, protein characterization, analysis of functional properties, sample preparation, protein extrusion, laboratory analysis, and experimental documentation.

The selected student will work under the supervision of Dr. Mohammad Zarei in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):

• Assist with protein extraction and concentration experiments
• Conduct protein characterization analyses (e.g., SDS-PAGE, protein content determination)
• Evaluate functional properties of protein concentrates (solubility, emulsification, foaming, water/oil holding capacity)
• Protein extrusion and extruded protein development
• Prepare plant-based samples for laboratory analysis
• Operate laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, spectrophotometers, pH meters, analytical balances, bioreactors)
• Collect and record experimental data
• Assist with enzymatic and chemical treatment protocols
• Maintain laboratory organization and cleanliness

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be a current Cal Poly Pomona student in good standing
• Strong written and verbal communication skills required
• Must demonstrate attention to detail and ability to follow laboratory protocols
• Ability to work independently and as part of a research team
• Must be able to work in a food science laboratory environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Majors in Food Science, Nutrition, Chemistry, Biology, or related fields
• Previous laboratory experience
• Interest in food processing, protein chemistry, or agricultural research
• Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques
