Piping Designer

Mechanical Designer IIIA specialized engineering services firm is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer III to provide senior-level design expertise and team leadership in support of energy infrastructure projects. This role blends advanced technical design work with mentorship, quality oversight, and process improvement responsibilities, making it ideal for a seasoned designer ready to take on greater ownership and influence within the design team.Key ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with engineers and other disciplines on the development of process and site designProduce complex 3D designs and models for sites, facilities, pipelines, supports, foundations, and related energy infrastructure elementsRead, interpret, and apply engineering terminology and symbols accurately across project deliverablesPartner with the Drafting & Design Coordinator to develop and refine design and drafting standards, procedures, and best practicesTrain, coach, and mentor Mechanical Designers, supporting their technical growth and developmentHelp coordinate external training opportunities for the design team as neededSupport project staffing decisions, ensuring each project is assigned to appropriately qualified personnelProvide leadership and direction to design and drafting staff on assigned projects, with potential supervisory responsibility over other designers or draftersReview the work of other designers and drafters for accuracy and adherence to company, client, and industry standardsReview deliverables and work in progress received from clients, consultants, or vendorsStay current on emerging industry tools and technologies, recommending updates or upgrades as appropriateCommunicate and coordinate with clients on design requirements and standards under the direction of Project Managers or Lead EngineersSupport hiring efforts and contribute to performance reviews for design team membersProvide input on new project proposals and cost estimatesReview scope changes, extra work requests, and factors impacting design team staffing needsEscalate project or personnel concerns to leadership as necessaryPrepare reports and documentation as requested by leadership or project managementSupport engineering and project teams with product research, vendor communication, and related tasksTravel to field locations as needed to take field measurements, sketches, and as-built documentationMaintain up-to-date drawing logs and task tracking, providing regular status updatesStrive to complete all assigned work on time and within budgetPerform Designer II-level responsibilities as neededPerform other duties as assignedWork EnvironmentThis role is primarily office-based, with occasional travel to field project locations (expected to be less than 20%). Office work may involve extended periods at a workstation with computer use. Overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required. A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is necessary.Physical RequirementsRegularly required to stand, walk, climb stairs, and use hands for extended tasksMust be able to lift up to 10 lbs. frequently and up to 25 lbs. occasionallyRequires close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust visual focusQualificationsRequired:Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a related field, or a certificate of completion from an accredited design/drafting program5+ years of experience developing complex 2D and 3D designs, with a demonstrated ability to drive design process improvements and innovative solutionsExpert-level proficiency in AutoCAD and the broader Autodesk product family for 3D modeling and draftingExpert-level proficiency in the CADWorx product suite (Plant, P&ID, Spec Editor, and Isogen)Expert knowledge of energy infrastructure design principlesExpert knowledge of plant layout, piping design, and support/hanger designExpert knowledge of pipes, valves, fittings, and associated material and dimensional specificationsStrong decision-making skills with the ability to identify alternative solutions to complex problemsAbility to provide clear, concise direction to design staffStrong communication skills suited to a dynamic team environment, including coordination with external contactsAbility to establish and maintain design standards, processes, and systems across a teamComfortable participating in and leading meetings with senior managementPreferred:Experience with additional 3D modeling software such as RevitEqual Opportunity StatementThis employer is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
