Local Government Reporter/Digital Media Manager

Job Description The Local Government Reporter/Digital Media Manager splits time between reporting—with a primary focus on city government—and managing digital media for the organization. The role includes creating and posting social media content for the News department and administering the email marketing system. In addition to city government, coverage may include crime and general assignment reporting. Strong print and broadcast writing skills are required. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with limited weekend and evening assignments. This position reports to the news director.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Research and pitch stories relevant to our nine communities
• Serve as the primary contact for local election coverage
• Report timely, newsworthy city council and school board actions
• Research stories for individual and team reporting
• Update and maintain Constant Contact story subscriptions
• Write stories for the website and the channel
• Produce news segments as needed
• Edit and post web scripts, stories, and copy for the News department
• Oversee and produce social media content
• Maintain strong working relationships with local sources, schools, and cities
• Ensure all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
• Perform special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field
• Three to five years of experience as a content creator, preferably in a newsroom
• Fluency in English
• Excellent writing skills for broadcast and the web
• Knowledge of AP Style
• Working knowledge of social media platforms and analytics
• Familiarity with city government structure and processes
• Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
• Proficiency with computers, telephones, and other office equipment
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
