Electrical Inspector

Overview Performs skilled inspections for compliance with the National Electrical Code, municipal ordinances, and regulations governing new or existing electrical installations. The principal function is to inspect electrical installations for the City of Caldwell. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the building official; however, leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work requires establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with city employees and the public. The duties are performed in an outdoor environment that may involve adverse weather conditions and working in cramped spaces, with some work accomplished in a general office environment. Responsibilities Inspect electrical installations and review plans for code compliance with the National Electrical Code. Inspect residential and commercial buildings for defective electrical work. Post corrections on electrical code violations at installation sites. Check electrical permits to assure that installed fixtures coincide with those on the permit. Inspect electric signs for compliance with code and listings. Order illegal electrical activity stopped until appropriate issues are resolved. Investigate complaints and recommend corrections. Inspect completed installations for workmanship and use of proper materials. Consult with supervisor on difficult enforcement problems. Answer questions and furnish the public with information regarding electrical issues. Perform all work tasks and activities in accordance with city policies, procedures, and safety practices. Respond to questions and provide explanations to contractors, property owners, and the general public on code compliance and permit issues. Maintain records of electrical permit activity and inspections and related activities. Keep immediate supervisor informed concerning work progress, including present and potential problems and suggestions for improvement. Respond to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. Communicate and coordinate regularly with others to maximize efficiency of interdepartmental operations. Attend approved meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, and review publications to remain current on principles and practices in assigned work areas. Respect the opinions of others and maintain a positive, professional working relationship with employees, supervisors, and others. Accept and perform changes in work assignments in a timely and effective manner. Assist building department staff as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education, Training, and/or Experience Required: Graduation from High School or GED, supplemented by specialized education in Electrical Inspection Technology; and Considerable experience in electrical inspection program administration; or Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to perform the work. Licenses, Certifications And Other Requirements Possession of a current and valid driver’s license. Possession of a Journeyman Electrical License for four (4) years. Possession or ability to obtain the ICC Certification as an Electrical Inspector within one (1) year of employment. Subject to a pre-employment background check and drug screen. #J-18808-Ljbffr
