Maintenance Worker

New Hope is a well‑maintained city of approximately 5.1 square miles. City staff maintain a good relationship with surrounding city governments, especially the City of Crystal with which the city shares an irregular border. As a maintenance worker, you will perform intermediate skilled trade work including a wide range of repair, construction and public works maintenance activities requiring operation of various types of heavy and light equipment and hand tools, and related work. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the streets and parks supervisor, the utilities maintenance supervisor or the operations manager. Essential Functions Inspects, maintains and/or repairs street right‑of‑ways, storm sewer systems, sanitary sewer systems and water systems at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly. Inspects, maintains and/or repairs playground equipment, park facilities, turf, ice rinks, hard courts, trees and shrubbery, etc. Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activity. Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation. Responds to emergency calls relative to poor street conditions, changes in water pressure or supply, slow sewers, etc. Interacts with citizens in a professional manner when informing them of a disruption of utility service or breakdown. Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. Drives trucks and operates equipment of various sizes and weights in loading, hauling and unloading various equipment or materials. Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to appropriate personnel; cleans equipment. Adjusts, lubricates or makes small repairs to equipment while in use. Performs all duties to appropriate safety and security standards. General knowledge of equipment used in carrying out maintenance and construction. General knowledge of occupational hazards and established safety practices. General skill operating standard computer equipment and applicable hardware and software. General skill operating standard tools of the trade and ability to learn specialized equipment operation. Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages. Ability to follow written and oral directions and work without on‑site supervision and make on‑site decisions related to work assignments. Ability to train seasonal employees in fundamental job duties. Ability to communicate effectively with other city staff. Ability to communicate tactfully with public. Ability to physically perform job responsibilities. Ability to perform in adverse climatic conditions. Ability to work irregular hours and respond to off‑duty‑hours or stand‑by needs for safe operation of the department. Ability to acquire new job skills as different needs arise. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, consultants, other city staff, vendors and the general public. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Physical Requirements This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires tasting or smelling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non‑weather) and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non‑weather), exposure to extreme heat (non‑weather), exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and working in confined spaces; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Special Requirements Ability to obtain a Minnesota Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of employment. Work experience in a maintenance position preferred.
