NURSE (CLINICAL/MED-SURG)

Duties

Formulate an age appropriate nursing care plan in accordance with standards of practice.

Identify wellness and risk factors, notifies health care provider if current care plan requires revision, and modifies the nursing care plan as needed.

Administer oxygen, IV fluid, continuous IV medication infusions, blood transfusion and prescribed oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications.

Administer and support infusion therapy services to patients in need of this service.

Operate and monitor medical equipment such as oxygen masks, intravenous infusion pumps, wall suction, cardiovascular monitors, and EKG machines.

Manage nasal-pharyngeal and gastric suction as well as a variety of other drainage tubes.

Perform various pulmonary treatments such as oxygen and nebulizer therapy.

Administer and monitor the use of therapeutic agents (medications) and pain-relieving drugs including narcotics and antibiotics, familiar with correct dosages and potential side effects.

Recognize significant and life-threatening changes in patient condition, including changes in cardiac rhythm evidenced by telemetry, and takes appropriate action.

Provide comprehensive, multi-disciplinary treatment for acute safety crises, medication monitoring, and stabilization of acute symptoms to support the safe transfer of care to outpatient settings.

Provide specialized information and education related to patient's illness and disease process, pre and post-operative care, diagnostic procedures, use of equipment related to disease/care, expected and possible adverse reactions to medications.

Communicate with other staff members and inpatient units to maintain continuity of care.

Perform the duties of charge nurse of a particular shift and will assume the responsibility for promoting quality, cost-effective nursing care within the framework of mission objectives of the Chief Nursing Officer.
