Why does the job exist?

The Audit and Compliance Division (ACD) enforce compliance with New Mexico tax laws. ACD employs a variety of tax research tools to analyze tax data to improve efficiency, streamline processes, improve customer service, and to develop new compliance programs and tax collection initiatives. The most crucial aspect of this position is overseeing customer service in the public facing
functions. This position may provide customer service in person, over the phone, via mail and fax, or in a virtual environment, based on business need and available mechanisms for communication in Albuquerque.


ACD promotes voluntary compliance of registering, filing, and paying taxes by educating taxpayers, promoting managed audits, and recommending payment plans, reoccurring payments, and good faith payments. If all efforts to get a taxpayer into compliance fail, ACD must take actions on accounts to enforce compliance. If a delinquency exists, ACD may proceed with collection functions for the delinquency as prescribed by policy and procedure. The purpose of this position is to supervise and direct the work of TRD staff in all five (5) of our district offices that perform these tasks.


How does it get done?

This position will:

* Coordinates operations of collection and customer service teams utilizing administrative concepts to ensure taxpayers are in compliance with state tax laws under the tax administration act by initiating collection activities, resolving tax issues and performing compliance activities to ensure that taxpayers are paying their fair share.
* Must ensure legislative mandates and performance measures are met, and that the Division and Department goals are met.
* Assignments also include ensuring that the specific tax program goals are met by ensuring professional customer service and the promotion of consistent, positive, fair and equitable treatment of taxpayers and employees.
* Requires the promotion of a positive working environment by demonstrating effective teamwork and communications with other bureau chiefs to facilitate effective leadership, teamwork and communication by working with and through supervisors to ensure revenue agents, customer service reps and supervisors have the resources required to perform job assignments.
* Requires the identification of process improvements in a team setting including the implementation of innovative and technologically advanced solutions to improve the efficiency, quality and sustainability of operational functions.

Ideal Candidate

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment.

* Understanding of New Mexico Taxation & Revenue (TRD) statutes and regulations
* Assigning and directly supervising the work of employees
* Communicating in a clear and concise manner
* MS Office programs including excel spreadsheets and preparing technical reports and letters to varied audiences.


Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience


Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
