Position Overview

NuWest is seeking an experienced Progressive Care Registered Nurse for an 8-week travel contract opportunity in Sylmar, California. In this role, you will provide an intermediate level of care to patients who are not stable enough for a general medical-surgical floor but do not require the full intensity of an ICU, including those recovering from major surgery, managing serious conditions such as heart failure, respiratory illness, or infection, or transitioning out of the ICU after stabilization. The unit is equipped for close monitoring, with cardiac telemetry, frequent vital sign checks, and rapid response to changes in condition. The ideal candidate is a confident, detail-oriented RN who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can commit to the full 8-week assignment. Travel stipends are available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide continuous cardiac telemetry monitoring; identify, interpret, and respond appropriately to dysrhythmias and changes in patient status
• Perform frequent, comprehensive assessments and reassessments; develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care for post-surgical, post-ICU, and medically complex patients
• Administer medications and IV therapies according to physician orders and facility protocols, monitoring closely for therapeutic response and adverse effects
• Monitor vital signs, hemodynamic status, intake and output, and laboratory results; recognize early signs of clinical deterioration, escalate abnormal findings promptly, and participate in rapid response and code situations
• Assess and manage pain using pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and evaluate patient response to treatment
• Perform skilled nursing procedures including IV insertion and maintenance, wound and drain care, catheter care, specimen collection, and EKG acquisition
• Document all patient care activities accurately and in real time within the electronic medical record, and provide thorough hand-off communication at shift change and during transfers of care
• Collaborate with physicians, case management, and the interdisciplinary team on rounds and discharge planning; educate patients and families on diagnoses, medications, and post-discharge self-care; maintain compliance with accreditation, infection control, OSHA, and HIPAA requirements; perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license valid in the State of California
• Minimum 1 year of recent Progressive Care nursing experience in a community-based acute care hospital
• Current AHA BLS certification and MAB or CPI certification
• LA City Fire and Life Safety Card (must be issued by the City of Los Angeles), and completion of the LA County Employee Health Clearance prior to assignment start date
• Must be able to pass required background checks and drug screening
